Lets us know what area he lives so no-one off here ends up with his buggered up motor :thumb:

cheers for suggestion mate :thumb:

Life after an m5 must be dull, was tempted myself but the big bills and reliability made me run to the hills.
If he wants luxury and speed id be looking at one of the amg mercs. Sl, cl, cls 55 amg engined can be had for under 20k and think there right up there as one of the best engines made, handbuilt and very reliable at nearly 500bhp.

wrx271 19 February 2013 06:48 PM

That's his problem everything seems dull that m5 is epic.
As for amg's same meat different gravy coil packs £1000 ignighter packs for the coils 800 it's silly. He doesn't want that anymore clutch on the m5 was over 2.5k.
I thought a s5 Audi might be worth a look

Hawkeye D 19 February 2013 06:51 PM

A decent Audi RS4 / RS6 maybe?
Two monsters.

harrisard 19 February 2013 06:53 PM

if amg merc's are in the same league as an m5 surely an Audi s5 is too!!

yeah the 2.7 bi-turbo rs4's are serious weapons!!!

LMC 19 February 2013 07:04 PM

Tbh you cant really have your cake and eat it meaning most things that are 20k and north used with good power will be expensive to fix when they go wrong.
Wouldnt bother with the s5 lovely motor look the part but a lads got one here in work and it was on par with the focus rs on the move so not really that quick plus 20mpg in the v8 is the norm.
Rs4 same again bit quicker than the s5 but the engine is known for clogging and will be expensive to fix.
Why not get well modded evo or scoob? Cheap really when they do go wrong but a 450/500bhp sorted one would be ballistic but could he live with the Interior/noise.

ATWRX 19 February 2013 07:14 PM

TVR Cerbera. Quicker than the M5 and I done just short of 2000 miles on a camping holiday in mine without any comfort issues, in fact, it was probably the most comfortable car I've owned.

Don't believe all the doom mongers and Clarkson fans that say they break all the time. I had mine for over two years and it only broke down once, gearbox shredded 5th cog, cost bot all (paid by AA breakdown repair) and 2 days without the car to repair. Could have happened to any car though.

Plus that sound.....mmmmmm

juniorc 19 February 2013 07:50 PM

Maybe a bit low rent but what about a vxr8?6.2 litres of v8 lovelyness!

mrmadcap 19 February 2013 07:56 PM

What sort of Impreza is an e60 m5

john banks 19 February 2013 08:00 PM

For £25k it is difficult to think of anything with the range of abilities of the E60 M5.

V10 RS6 start at a few thousand more. Not sure on their reliability record.

What sort of problems and do they think they'll be able to avoid them by simply buying something else of similar nature?

XDevil666 19 February 2013 08:35 PM

add a couple of G and GTR all the way baby :D

bioforger 19 February 2013 08:35 PM

If he can afford to spunk another 25K why not put part of that towards keeping the M5 running  ? Or does that 25K include the sale of the buggered M5 ?

wrx271 19 February 2013 09:15 PM

The m5 is an old car now and he's had and maintained it for a number of years he simply doesn't want the huge repair bills anymore his car is used for business aswell so it can't be outrageous he might even fix it again and keep it.

He's going to have a look at a insignia vxr tomorrow not quite an m5 but a nice looking motor.

Gtr isn't an option he's not a fan.

As for it being a buggered m5 that wasn't a fair comment on my side but if you think cars like this don't get traded in with problems then you better not buy a used car.

Dealer takes car
Dealer puts car into auction
Someone buys car with fault for a good price
That someone then repairs said car and sells for profit.

He's not out to scam anyone the engine light is on so he can't hide it

I changed my E60 M5 for the E90 M3..same engine minus 2 cylinders :)

£25K should get you a 08 M3

LMC 19 February 2013 09:37 PM

Prices on the e9× m3 will be coming down a lot soon due to the new m3/4 thats coming, ive seen 09 m3s for 22k.

probably ...but good spec and low mileage cars always command a higher price

i traded mine in without a single problem.......in fact it just had a major service and new brakes disc and pads all round , reason these are trade in is that not many folks on the cash buyer's market have £20k+ cash in hand , so its easier to get finance buying from the Bmw Stealers

mervil 20 February 2013 01:57 PM

Buy Frayz's VERY well sorted Scoob... ;)

its had brakes its well looked after but the problem now is missfire cylinder 1 hes been told it could be a vanos pump or vanos units theres 2 on a m5

in dollars
vanos pump 2,600 +vat
vanos inlet 2.400 +vat
vanos exh 2.400 + vat

and then there not sure it will fix it as hes already chucked 1.500 on bits that havent cured it.

Henrik 20 February 2013 02:58 PM

Ouch, I'd love an M5, but those running costs are quite frankly scary.

I know there's a manual version of the M5 e60, but it was only available in the states.

As a hobbyist, it might be possible to convert one to a manual etc, and I'm sure I could bodge some other brakes onto it as well (AP?), which might well end up cheaper than replacing with standard bits. However, the engine stuff is scary...

What country...?

If luxury and refinement are important to you then stay away from any of the rice rockets; you'll need something in a similar vein from Audi, Merc or Jag.
