Hi,

I am bidding on something on an internet auction site this afternoon...

I am currently the highest bidder and only one other person has shown interest.

The question I have is that currently I have not met the reserve..
assuming the other bidder doesn't return at 2minutes to the end a pip me to it.. Do you think I should keep on bidding until I meet the reserve assuming it is still within my limit or remain at my current bid?
The hope being the seller might decide he was expecting to much and sell it to me for that amount or perhaps suggest if I pay slightly more or something?

Any experiances or views appreciated

for information the current bid is £80 so not mega money but not pennies either.

Depends on the seller entirely. No point bidding too high - they'll probably just relist it with a lower reserve.

yeah I am sure you are right..

only I would like it this weekend...

so if it gets relisted I'll have to wait another week...
but then I get to bid again.. this bidding gets addictive..

glad I am doing on behalf of my father-in-law, it is good this spending someone elses money... :)

Bidding is adictive - beware! Set yourself a price that you're not going to pay more than, and walk away. Chances are that there'll be another listed in a couple of days anyhow.

I am getting tight as I get older so do just that..

Although there has not been one of these on any site for two months until now.... :)

It closed and automatically restarted for another 10days.

So I shall look at it again in 10days time...

I would put money on the fact that you would not be interested anyway... not unless you also need to lay a new driveway?!

The thing is........ a lot of these auction sites do a proxy-type of voting for you.

You set your maximum amount, then the site bids for you, but only to the minimum increment over the next highest bidder.

Then, at the end of the auction, if the highest registered amount was under the reserve, but the amount you were prepared to go to was above it, the site bids the minimum amount over the reserve, so you get your kit.

Does that make sense?

but I was not keen on paying more than I had bid without talking with my father as it is for him so left it.

The auction automatically restarted for closing 10days time.

Hopefully the seller might drop the reserve now.

My father wants to fix his own drive.. he/we won't be knowing on any doors asking if you want your drive done.. or sending a 10year old to do it..

There is a gypsy site near to where I used to work in a petrol station as a kid. Used to amaze me how they came in, in a brand new car and put £2 of petrol in and then would be back in about 2hours for another £2 worth?!? strange... doing that not them..
no offence intended and I think they are lovely people..
Do wish they wouldn't camp in the middle of football pitches though... used to make playing footie a problem...

trenches are the answer.

thats what they did to a park somewhere. the council dug trenches round the outside of of the park so that the pikeys couldn't get their caravans in.

Would be interested to know how they get away with no address for registering cars.. I presume they don't... so what about driving licence address...? you cannot get a gatso noticification if there is no address listed?! might get pulled over lots though.

But could this be a time where you suddenly because a gypsy...
with regard to the car...

Contact the seller, ask question on Yahoo.
Ask what the reserve is, many sellers will tell you particularly if it hasn't sold 1st time round, also ask if they are prepared to close early for a price you are happy with.

I need to speak to my father to see what he wants to do.

I prefer ebay where you can email them direct. Yahoo doesn't show email address so you have to place a question. Which I did but it was removed once auction restarted.. so I can place the question so everyone can see the answer etc..

No rush on it so happy to wait..

I've got a bit of experience of E-bay.I've sold stuff on there and if it doesn't reach reserve i just relist it.Basically relisting is very cheap,and there's always the chance that someone may see it who never saw it before.Sometimes i may lower the reserve a bit,but i've seen stuff relisted loads and loads of times.
Doing what you're trying to do,i can understand it,i've tried it loads myself,but it hardly ever works.
If you want it,just put in your bid,go to the max you want(under the reserve)and see what happens.
Dont forget the reserve is the sellers lowest acceptable offer.
From the sellers point of view,the worst thing they can do is sell it out of the auction for less than the reserve.
