Is is normal?

I know someone with an IQ of 210

Is an IQ of 210 normal would you say?

dpb 07 February 2013 09:18 PM

Probably bipoloar

jods 07 February 2013 09:20 PM

So - not normal then?

jods 07 February 2013 09:22 PM

On the other side of the coin, would you describe someone with an IQ of 45 as Normal?

GlesgaKiss 07 February 2013 09:29 PM

Of course it's not normal. Take a look at the different IQ scales. Anything in the 130 region is very intelligent, and over 140 ish is classed as 'genius'. However the person you know got that score, they are clearly gifted in some respect.

hodgy0_2 07 February 2013 09:30 PM

it really depends whether he is gay or not

alcazar 07 February 2013 09:39 PM

How do they know they have an IQ of 210? That's VERY high.....

IWatkins 07 February 2013 09:40 PM

... Or had winter tires fitted when the test was taken.

dpb 07 February 2013 09:40 PM

LOL , iv a mate claims 150 plus. , he's clearly borerline, axmits it himself

210 must be record

GlesgaKiss 07 February 2013 09:44 PM

Yeah it sounds made up, unless it's some other scale or something. I don't know about bipolar, but autistic?

IWatkins 07 February 2013 09:45 PM

I was going to suggest BS anyway. "Genius" is up in the 140-160 range (top 1%) and the bell curve gets very thin, very quickly above that.

jods 07 February 2013 10:01 PM

So now we are getting somewhere. The Bell curve (assuming normal distribution) gets very very thin for IQ' above say 150 and below 50.

So. It isn't Normal to be in those ranges because the number of people meeting that criteria must number somewhat less than 2.5 % of the population at both ends of the scale?

f1_fan 07 February 2013 10:01 PM

Sounds like BS to me unless he is using some obscure test.

The Cattell III B test used by Mensa has a maximum score of 161.

jods 07 February 2013 10:06 PM

Hi F1. Forget the 210 claim for the moment. I'm try establish the concept of "Normal"

f1_fan 07 February 2013 10:17 PM

The idea of the IQ is that the mean value should be set and that 95% of the population should fall between two standard deviations of the mean. Most of the time IQ tests are set to have a mean of 100 and 15 as their standard deviation which means 95% of the population should score between 70 and 130.

Given that only 5% score outside of this and the distribution drops away even further the further you get from the mean then a score of 210 is not normal no, it's exceptionally high, but like I said not possible on most modern IQ tests which due to scoring granularity restrictions have a practical maximum - 161 in the case of the Cattell III B as mentioned above.

So no it's not 'normal' although that word needs to be used with care ;)

hill79 07 February 2013 10:25 PM

There's huge debate over how accurate a measure of intelligence IQ tests are and has been for years, but that aside, a score of 210 is markedly above 'normal' results - 100 points or so.

jods 07 February 2013 10:39 PM

Ok. We (I believe) have established that if you are outside of the 95% I.e the 2.5% to the left and 2.5% to the right, that could be fair to say it is NOT normal.

Saxo Boy 07 February 2013 10:57 PM

Never heard of anything like as high as 210. That would be insane!

The Dogs B******s 07 February 2013 10:59 PM

Mines 211, he's a thicko in my book:D

scud8 07 February 2013 11:00 PM

I don't think it's true to say that outside the 70-130 band is not normal. Historically someone with an IQ of 70 or less was considered mentally retarded, but people with IQs in the 130-150 range are likely to be indistinguishable from people in the 70-130 band.

Normal is a term that can be interpreted in too many different ways to use here and in certian other discussions. ;) I would say that someone outside of the 95% is atypical rather than abnormal.

I think I know where you are going here btw ;) :D

stevebt 07 February 2013 11:22 PM

That iq is higher than Steven Hawkings iq so your mate is either one of the smartests people in the world or he talks a load of bollocks, I think I would go with the second one.

Doesn't look like there has been many people with an iq of over 200.

There Is an online test. Somewhere

Couldn't disagree more but I have no evidence to back up my viewpoint. I feel like I can easily tell when I'm engaging with someone who's IQ is nicely above average 115+ or below average <85. Sadly, most people are pretty dumb in my experience. I would imagine if you conversed with a room fool of people with a Mensa verified IQ of 100 (average) you'd feel pretty sorry for humanity (unless you were a mouth breather yourself).
