I was a bit concerned to see a membership card with my name on in the new tax disc holder. A mate of mine who works for the Met advised me never to leave anything in the car with my name or address on it. The reason is that if your car is nicked and pulled for anything such as speeding the standard questions go - Is this your car sir ? Can I have your name ? Address ? etc. which is then checked against PNC. So if it hasn't been repoted yet they will get away.

Apparently it is quite frustrating when a call comes over regarding a stolen car that you had stopped half an hour earlier and let the 'owner' off with a warning !

Take the membership card out then http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif. Makes the top bit redundant but you can put e.g. an AA membership card in it, which has your name on it but not your address.

Good point, though.

Er, the membership card has your name and county on it, and also your membership number, so it doesnt have your address on it at all, or shouldnt do ???????

BarryK 18 January 2000 10:03 PM

Heck, mine says Greater Manchester, when it should say Lancashire. Mumble mumble, not like the old money etc............

We did discuss the security implications at great length, before going with the tax disc holders and cards.

Of the 7 committee members, all bar one had their service book and Subaru Assistance card in the glove box and the one that didn't said that there was almost certainly some papers with his home address in the car.

On this subject, if your car was nicked, would you really want it back?

Ian Cook 19 January 2000 12:48 AM

Here hold on Pete, I havent got my service book in the car, and i dont have anything with my address in it either ? Never have, never will http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif well not unless I am taking the car to be serviced anyway http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Got told off by a Big Friendly Policeman once for having no proof of ownership/insurance/MOT when he stopped me as I looked too young to be driving the car.
They should be in the car at all times, says he.
Sorry Sir, says I.

Ian Cook 19 January 2000 12:57 AM

I carry insurance etc in my wallet, but thats attached to me not the car http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif not that theres anything in it to nick at the moment anyway http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

I never carry any form of id, 1, incase the car does get broken in to. 2, because I didn't know that we are living in a police state.

If I ever get stopped, they just comment about a nice car for a young bloke to drive, and give me a producer.

I suspect I'm like most people - if it is a professional (neat) job then I'd like it back quickly and no insurance claim. However, if it's a joy rider ie. big mess and then thrashed - I'd rather they burned it !

The Name is good enough if it goes from outside your house ! Name and county are OK if you've got an uncommon surname name and something like

Orville 19 January 2000 02:45 PM

All they need is your name if they steal it from your home address (which is more likely than from anywhere else(.

I think the comments Pete Croney made are correct. Most people do leave something with there name on it in the car. I've got my Subaru Assist card, Tesco clubcard, credit card receipts and maybe even a few business cards in the glovebox.

Whilst I do my best to protect my car (Stoplock/floodlit drive), If some fu**er does steal it, I don't want to see it again. The insurance can sought it out and I'll get a new one.

Bajie 19 January 2000 02:47 PM

Sorry if you aren't but Are you The Kelvin House Orville?

Nick 19 January 2000 04:43 PM

In that case, my membership card is perfect as my name is spelt wrong! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Ian Cook 19 January 2000 05:12 PM

I havent received that mail Nick ?

BTW they can get your name from more or less anywhere if they really want to find out, especially if you are not ex directory ?
