HELP! maf sensor problem???!

Hi. i have a 1995 import wrx and a few weeks ago its started cutting out at junctions and when slowing down with clutch in. i changed fuel filter didnt help. so i got a second hand maf sensor (green label) i disconnected battery and fitted new sensor.left batery disconneted a while then tryed starting it. at first it ran ok but only for 10 seconds before cutting out.then after starting it a few times it ran but very lumpy after 2000 rpm and engine check light is now on. any help would be great.

I had the same symptoms as you (cutting out after 10secs-ish) when I forgot to replug the MAF sensor in after removing it temporarily so I'm guessing you're on the right track, perhaps it's the wrong type of sensor or not coneected properly??

Check the Idle control valve is working ok, was the MAF a new one? or a second hand one?

It's the wrong maf for your car then, remove and wait till you can get the correct one, if the car ran ok on the old but revs dropped at traffic lights when you dip the clutch as you pull up, that says to me dirty idle control valve, but I could be wrong. If i remember correctly orange Maf is 97/98 v3/4

Re the ICV look at the link below for a pic of one, (it will be just below the intercooler on the right hand side,(mounted more centrally on later models try cleaning it with some brake cleaner, (do not remove it without a new seal as you will never get the old one back in)..

All this is assuming your symptoms turn out to be the ICV ofc. I could be blowing up the wrong bagpipe so to speak.

Have a look on here for a guide to reset it, on a newage you have to start/stop the engine 5 times, on earlier classics it will be different, there will be a guide on here somewhere.

yeah think ill just have to clean idle control and fit new gasket then try again.if that dont work new maf sensor and if that fails new idle control valve.

FYI that doesn't reset the ECU on a newage it just clears certain CEL's if the problem's been resolved.
To do a proper ECU reset on a stanard newage Denso ECU you need a laptop connected to the OBD II port with the necessary cable and software, there is no other way.

Classics yeah you can do it - look on Jolly Green Monster's website.

took out idle control valve today and gave it a clean and fitted new gasket.now car wont start at all just keeps turning over?

L.J.F 30 January 2013 03:51 PM

Keep at it mate and it will start gradually, it may cut out a couple of times until it resets it self at the correct revs.

petebell 30 January 2013 04:10 PM

ok car started for a wole two seconds then cut out. it cuts out even if i keep the revs up?

MarkCSC 30 January 2013 04:42 PM

Firstly pull up the codes for the ECU fault http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...gECUCodes#toc3

Then reset the ECU

http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p.../ECUReset#toc3

petebell 30 January 2013 04:53 PM

yeah ill try that tommorow morning.the guide i found said start engine but couldnt start it to check

MarkCSC 30 January 2013 04:59 PM

You don't need to start the engine to check the codes, just turn the ignition on.

Good luck!! :)

petebell 30 January 2013 05:00 PM

just did diagnostic test and is constantly flashin = no fault? must be a fault somewere gettin new maf tonight but not holding out much hope!

petebell 30 January 2013 06:54 PM

4 th maf sensor is here now with a airbox instead of induction kit.see if it helps

petebell 01 February 2013 12:38 PM

gasket on idle control valve was ok.car starts but doesnt idle and blows white smoke. just change idle control valve?

petebell 01 February 2013 12:55 PM

car only cuts out when the revs arent kept up its still showing no faults on diagnostic

Get a local specialist to take a look fella, if its blowing white smoke out the back that's not a good sign.

petebell 03 February 2013 05:00 PM

car is not boosting at all now. no pipes have come off turbo. white smoke seems to have cleared?

petebell 06 February 2013 12:38 PM

ok took intercooler back off and the turbo is blowing air out intercooler pipe?its showing vaccum on my gauges of 50 kg/cm2? no oil showing in turbo. ordering a compression tester tonight

Ginola 06 February 2013 04:16 PM

Dude, get a specialist to take a look,
Turbo's blow air that's what there designed to do..

petebell 06 February 2013 05:19 PM

engine gone it was blowing air from were was ment to be sucking, turbo is fine.looks like valves have gone putting air in cylinders and pushin out thru turbo creating a vaccum.new engine time :(
