Bottom end re-build
I've just discovered that my 2003 WRX has a horrid rattle. diagnosed as big end rattle. The engine is coming out to have that sorted, I was wondering what other bits and bobs should I attend to while the engine is out on the bench. Serviceable bits etc....
Any help will be much appreciated. Pete... |
You having the internals uprated ???
Good opportunity to build a strong engine. Whos doing the work ? |
Not going for any up grades on the internals, just keeping the old girl standard. Paul Inch engine services are doing all the hard work.... any ideas on what to service/change while im at it...?
|
rings, main and big end bearings, all gaskets and seals and the block bolts.
It'll be like a new block then albeit the pistons and rods are in good nick. |
Why not throw an extra couple of hundred quid at it and future proof it.
|
I don't quite understand why you are asking on here if you have a company already doing a re-build. Surely they will know what will need replacing?
One word of advice though, replace the crankshaft. Idiot try and clean the old one up but there is a hard coating that usually gets destroyed when the bearings fail. Keep in mind that a crank is the best part of £400. Another option is to just replace the short block itself with a brand new unit. |
Thanks for all your help, luckily it was only the beginnings of a rattle so I caught it before anything failed. The people doing the rebuild won't be removing or replacing the engine so I was just seeing if I could get some input on things like belts, tensioners, pumps. Etc that are difficult or impossible to get to with the engine in.
Thanks again. |
Ok i will say it, if it was rattling then it has failed, there will be bearing material in the oil full stop.
You really should put uprated internals in for the price difference, but it's your car so i don't care.:D I'd do new oil pump, water pump, oil modine, cambelt idlers and tensioners, and a new clutch. |
Thanks for that, I was thinking failed would be no engine.... Anyways I'm replacing the engine altogether now as the rebuild price was just to much. When I say to much I mean more than I paid for the car......
I'll get there in the end. |
Just buy a second hand, low mileage newage sti motor from a trusted seller.
|
Surly speak to engine tuner as he's in Plymouth

In my experiance its the opposite. |
I would not buy a S/H bottom end or engine no matter who the seller is, these engines are known for bottom end issues and buying a S/H lump is buying more trouble down the line.
I rebuilt mine at a cost of 3.3K but at least i know its now up to the job. |
Iainmilford is selling a well looked after wrx motor from a 55 plate blobeye. Pm him.
