IMPREZA TURBO 2000 Clutch Replacement
 

Hi folks, Looking to purchase a classic 'IMPREZA TURBO 2000' but it's advertised as the clutch is slipping on it... Will this cost a fortune to get done?

Sorry i'm not that clued up this will be my first impreza, Is that particular clutch an uprated one? If so, Would a standard one be cheaper?

Yeah that's a standard one if you fit a cheaper one it won't last long

Fair enough, That's a pretty decent price to be fair - Could any other symptoms be blamed on the clutch slipping i.e. could he be using the clutch slipping as to pull the wool over my eyes for other issues if you know where i'm coming from.

Whell when I bought my uk turbo the guy sed it needed a clutch because it was slipping and to be fair it was best bet is to take a mate who clued up on cars if not possible check the car for a knocking nose coming from the engine like someone hitting it with a hammer over and over again check the front and rear jacking point thay are famous for rotting I found that. Out the hard way also also smoke from around the turbo and exhaust can mean hg turbo seals found that out the hard way As well

Clutch kit from Aztec. I paid £185.00 for an exedy (blue box) which is fine for standard cars.
Fitting of course on top, but was no more than £200.

Seen exedy ones on ebay for £150 plus about £6 postage, A lad I know who owns his own garage said he will charge me £180 to do the job.

For standardish power, the standard Exedy organic clutch is perfect. That particular model car comes with a 230mm clutch fitted, although a 225mm clutch will also fit.

As the clutch is currently slipping, you will most likely need to skim or replace the flywheel due to hot spots. Skimming is typically around £60 if you can find the right place to do it and you then also need to fit a new spigot bearing. A better option is to take the opportunity to upgrade the flywheel with a better lightweight forged unit which comes with a new spigot bearing.

Factor around £200 in labour.

Depending if you intend on upping the power you could go for the uprated Exedy which I'll be looking to get shortly due to standard slipping clutch on my remapped uk wagon running over 300lbft of torque.

Seen them on Camskill for £260 a couple of weeks back and was quoted £150 labour inclusive to fit by two reputable independents on here :)

So £410ish for an uprated clutch fitted is worth upgrading whilst you can to me :) All IMO and dependant on possible future power upgrades.

So will this one fit a W reg UK turbo standard motor?

Wish I could afford to get a lightweight flywheel but at this time that isn't an option so I will just have to ask my mechanic to inspect the flywheel and have it skimmed if needs be... he has quoted me £180 labour to fit a new clutch kit to it.

I was unaware all classic shape uk turbo 2000's used the same clutch, I thought it may have differed between the earlier and later models and possibly particular registrations but obviously you know what you're talking about so I'm happy with your answer and I will be more than happy to purchase the clutch kit from you once I've picked the car up later in the week.

You're welcome. I had assumed it was 2000 model/year from first glance at your post and the subsequent link that someone put up from autotrader. Early years had the 225mm fitted by default, but as they are interchangeable anyhow, you won't know exactly what size the previous owner has fitted in any case.

If you are skimming the flywheel, then you can fit either. If you happen to have a 225mm fitted at the moment and try and get away without a skim (not advised) then you will not be able to fit a 230mm as there will be a slight lip on the flywheel from the previous smaller clutch. If you are trying to get away without skimming, then buy a 225mm as it will fit either way. New clutch on a used flywheel with high spots on = judder, to the point you may well end up having to do it all over again.

The bigger the clutch, the more power it will take (like for like).

Yes it's a W reg, I will go for the 225 option then to be on the safe side - I wont be going for mega power gains to be fair.

Just to clarify...if the 225mm will fit all classics, and I have a UK turbo 2000 will it be ok with decat, td05 and supporting mods. I don't see me going belong 280 hp.

I enjoy my car, don't race it but just like the occassional spool up off a slip road.

Yes, 225mm will fit, although the 230mm will take more power, being bigger. With your mods I would recommend the 230mm version which is good for up to 300bhp :)

Clutch came yesterday as stated mate thanks very much, got it booked into garage next week to be done - can't wait! :)
