Knocking, screech and oil light flashed up

Here goes, bring the bad news. Was just out in the scoob, 20 minute journey, give it a bit of beans off some lights, 1st 2nd,3rd then let off the throttle. As I went back to the throttle it started making a knocking sound and a screech then the oil light flashed up and then off. Was only half a mile from home, so slowly drove back, pulled up on the drive with it making the odd screeching sound then shut her off.Left it half an hour then checked oil and its well up on the full mark. Nothing leaking underneath cant smell anything and cant see anything.I'll try and get some more info in the morning. Only had the car 1month :-( . Any help would be appreciated sadly.

tubbytommy 27 January 2013 06:06 PM

is it knocking now?

Scoobyblues 27 January 2013 06:09 PM

Only started after checking oil. The knock was still there but not as bad. Haven't started it since

tubbytommy 27 January 2013 06:10 PM

sounds like the bottom end has failed im afraid

Scoobyblues 27 January 2013 06:12 PM

Oooo bugger. What's the cost to fix that. Sounds pricey

2.5k minimum im afraid:(

Scoobyblues 27 January 2013 06:20 PM

Really!!!!! ****!!!!! I'll break the ****er then.

tubbytommy 27 January 2013 06:37 PM

a replacement engine would be cheaper than a rebuild.

what model car is it

Scoobyblues 27 January 2013 06:45 PM

It's an 03 blob WRX, it's running quite high power with mods and switchable maps so perhaps that's the problem, 340bhp is probly pushing it. Big shame aswell, was enjoying it, the misses is gonna kick off big time, gonna get a big "told you so" as she didn't want me to have it :-/ lol

id get a second hand engine be a lot cheaper as a wrx isnt going to be worth a great deal in bits

brendy76 27 January 2013 06:54 PM

Scoobyblues, get an opinion and a second opinion.
My 01 wrx has knock and I will be doing mine for around the 1k mark.
Sourced a very low mileage Closed deck block short engine for 600 and a local guy is doing it out of hours for me, I already have coolant, filters etc sat here so just a new gates timing belt and she will be good to go.
If someone told me I was looking at 2.5k min Id have sold up already.

Cheers for the comments guys. To say I'm feeling gutted is an understatement. I'll have to look at my options. Does anyone know any specialists in the Northampton area?

join the babs beds and bucks scoobys forum.

there is a mobile mechanic called tim on there and he is excellent and cheap.

he used to work for zen so he knows his imprezas:thumb:

Scoobyblues 27 January 2013 08:17 PM

Cheers Tommy ill give that a go.

Scoobyblues 28 January 2013 07:23 PM

How do I find out what engine type mine is? The car is an 03 WRX Blobeye. I know it's irrelevant but it's got the following mods:-

Andy Forester Remap
(dual switchable maps & ECUTek liecence)
TD05H 16G Turbo
STI Intercooler & Undertray
650cc Injectors
NGKPFR7B spark plugs
Warlbro fuel pump
K&N panel filter
Exeedy Organic clutch
Roger clark oil pump
Timing belt replaced
Magnex Headers
Magnex Decat Downpipe
Magnex Centre section
H&S Decat Upipe
Prodrive backbox
Full Geometry setup
STI Suspention
whiteline droplinks
whiteline rear anti roll bar
Front upper strut brace
Rear upper strut brace
B&M Short shifter
Racetec Boost guage
Racetec Oil pressure/temp guage
Samco intercooler hose kit
Eath grounding kit

Would I be better off looking for an STI bottom end if it bolts to my WRX top?

The Pink Ninja 28 January 2013 07:31 PM

Best replacement is a Newage STi MY01-05 short engine so you can just bolt your heads on and away you go...After having it checked over obviously, Prices are around the £7-800 mark + headgaskets and fluids.

Scoobyblues 28 January 2013 07:32 PM

Cheers Gaz, that seems pretty reasonable. Will I need a remap after?

id get it checked as it may have been the cause of your failure in the first place

Dale17 28 January 2013 07:54 PM

Check tommy a sig.... Lol

XDevil666 28 January 2013 10:20 PM

you are going to drive yourself crazy all night reading this forum pal!

Just turn off the website, fire her up in the morning and see what happen's.

no point in saying full rebuild etc when you havent tried firing it back up yet.

believe me i have drove myself mad from this forum thinking my headgasket and everything has gone wrong!

This site can make you paranoid

scooby(puppy power) 29 January 2013 08:16 AM

the screeching could have been the bearings turning and blocking the oil ways, thats what happened to mine,

2200 to have rebuilt with uprated bearings, uprated oil pump, uprated headgaskets etc and a new clutch and timing belt whilst the motor was out and in bits, still got the knackered crank in my garage and a box of chewed up pieces lol

Spot on;)

jazzyjembreaze 29 January 2013 06:52 PM

Did you have a oil pressure gauge fitted
If so do you have pressure

Scoobyblues 29 January 2013 09:02 PM

Don't really want to start it up again to check Jazzy, sounds that bad I don't want to risk it. Sounds like its only coming from one side of the engine but I guess you can never tell 100% I still had drive after it happened.

jazzyjembreaze 29 January 2013 09:26 PM

You can't diagnose over a forum
Screeching could be the heads running dry if you have no pressure
I hope it's not terminal for you , so get it looked at ASAP , / yea don't start it
You could drop the oil & look for sheening & fragmentation contamination etc

maydew 29 January 2013 10:13 PM

out of curiosity when was the oil last changed?

Scoobyblues 29 January 2013 10:19 PM

You're right Jazzy. Got a few numbers of some specialists that are mobile so I don't have to move it til diagnosed properly. Oil was changed by previous owner a month or so before I bought it. Owner was a rally specialist himself, had the best set up I've ever seen a private seller have. Anyway I'll let you know what the outcome is very soon

maydew 29 January 2013 10:24 PM

many miles done since the oil change could be related you see? , if it is the worst case my advice is do it right once .

Scoobyblues 29 January 2013 10:27 PM

No only a couple around 1-2k.It was a weekend car for him and it 'WAS' for me too. :-/

L.J.F 29 January 2013 10:33 PM

Everyone is a rally specialist when it comes to selling a car........

Is it possible that the screeching sound is one of the belts and that something is seized, a knackered tensioner sometimes makes a knocking sound that can be confused with bottom end failure.

Good luck with it anyway mate.
