i quite like this line

"A number of the councillors who approved the measure are reportedly themselves pub owners - but Mr Healy-Rae denied that this had influenced the vote."

DYK 22 January 2013 05:36 PM

I like this comment..

I'm not sure this makes a difference.

When I holidayed in rural Eire a few years back I was concerned about driving to the pub. The guest house landlady told me not to worry as the local on-duty police would be drinking there anyway.

We left about 1.00 in the morning through the back door, just in case the Chief of Police was passing the front.

The drink drive laws have a lot to answer for in the huge demise of the pub industry, especially in rural areas.... No one can argue against that...

Plus this was on R4 on my way home.... They had some miserable biatch on from Brake!.... God i fcuking hate that organisation with a passion.... Unelected do-gooders who think they speak for motorists.... Fcuck right off you frigid cow...... Aaaand breathe:)

Or those that have had their lives ruined by some useless, selfish drink drivers.

There were no cars just over 100 years ago. And pubs were doing ok then.
Walk to the bloody pub if you want a drink

In general the Garda in the very rural areas turn a blind eye.
Bit like parts of Europe - Belgium for example, everyone drinks and drives and they say that unless you're all over the road the police don't bother.
They don't go out and get totally bolloxed like the English though.

Kerry has pubs galore though - unless you're really out in the sticks

David Lock 23 January 2013 01:41 PM

Of course it will never happen. The Irish Gov't wouldn't change the law.

But a nice Irish story nonetheless :)

Couldnt the demise otherwise be caused by the cost of a pint and ,equally, the no smoking ban ? And i , for one, wouldnt want the death of some innocent person caused by having one too many , on my consious

Leslie 23 January 2013 03:06 PM

I think the most sensible course is to forbid any drinking of alcohol if you are driving at all.

It was for sure the demise of many pubs in Southern Ireland, and many of the pubs challenged the ban

ditchmyster 23 January 2013 03:49 PM

Out here in rural istria (croatia) everyone drinks and drives, there is no public transport, it's pretty much excepted by everyone including the police as long as you don't get wasted and drive like an idiot or crash they leave you alone.

Because it's rural everyone knows each other and if someone gets wasted then others drive them home.

I'm in no way condoning drinking and driving, but in some places it's different to being in a city where you can flag a cab or jump on a bus.

It's all about the greater good!

[All together]
The greater good.

Kerry is my neck of the woods and very large parts of it are like the highlands of Scotland with roads that are one track lanes that have grass growing down the middle of them and where you can wait an hour for a car to come along. There is a local near us where the old buffer in the corner goes home (about 4 miles up a lane Loeb would think twice about driving up) on his old moped, but not before putting on his safety gear - which is his anorak on backwards and, if its raining, a carrier bag on his head. I have a photo of him somewhere that I'll put on here if I can find it.
Not clever granted ( but quite funny) but also indicative of a place where there is very little traffic and where one bar can serve people spread over 20 miles of mountain, so I have some sympathy for this and think that two pints in such a location is/ wd be acceptable. Won't happen though - so the locals will just carry on doing what they have always done...

And I bet the old boy will enjoy a roll up by the log fire if he wants one :thumb:
