I obtained my exhaust from Japan. I cannot see any distinguishing marks. It appears to be stainless, one piece, pipe diameter of 4 1/2" or 115mm at the back of the car. It has a flat flange where it connects to the downpipe as opposed to the STi exhaust which takes a beveled 'o' ring type gasket.

Looks to me like a HKS HIPER.
Mine had a small plate welded under the rear muffler saying what model it was.

When you say you want to record/edit car sounds ... what do you mean exactly, how do you want to edit it? eg. you can record on a minidisc for example and load it onto your computer using Cool Edit or Cool Edit pro ... (was glad to hear that when I played your exhaust sound, it wasn't overmodded, but sounded as if it could do with beefing up http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif )

Two things really.

One I wanted to capture the sound and break it down into smaller pieces to use on the web. I wanted to keep the sound quality as high as possible. As I am a poor Frontpagey person I can only use .au format which seems to mean mono only and naff quality.

Two the best quality to record the sounds at for PC/CD and any ideas on recording output from cars.

Scoop, I'm sure there are better ways but I was sitting in my car with my laptop and a microphone behind the exhaust. I was clicking the mouse and revving then saving. I filled the house with carbon monxide and got earache from the wife. I then just saved in the two formats you saw and linked it on the web page. Could be a bit of fun recording the sounds. Might help people choose exhausts/intakes etc. dunno. We would all need to use the same process to get similar sounds. Bit of expert advice would be good.

We use as standard a position 250 mm and 45 deg inboard from the tailpipe to record 'tailpipe noise'.
I guess what you are recording here are 'high and low blips'. This is only one of the sounds that can be recorded.
The most useful for a good assessment of an exhaust system is to run the vehicle on a dyno at WoT with 1000 - 6000 (or whatever http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif )rpm over 60 sec or so. Also cut throttle and take it down from top rpm to 1000 again at same ramp down speed. Perhaps try it when you next go to a dyno day http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

In fact EVERYBODY do it and post sound clips for comparison!!!!

I guess it all depends on how serious you are about recording/editing stuff as to whether it's just worth it for instance just to put some car exhaust sounds on (however great they may sound http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif ). Like most things you can spend a lot of money of getting the equipment ie minidisc recorder/decent microphone/minidisc player etc then the connectors from the player to computer and then the computer software etc to do it ....

It isn't an HKS Hiper or Apexi exhaust. They exit the car at more of an angle and the join between the tail trim and silencer box is more rounded off.

Not too clued up on the Trust exhausts, but it eliminates 2 others.

Don't know if it helps but the exhaust actually came with the car (the car was second-hand) when it was imported from Japan, the original STi exhaust was still brand new.

Maybe the Trust is the one.

Except I've just noticed that the Trust seems to be a back-box and mine is one-piece up to the downpipe.
