Western union help please

Right I'm going to view a car on the weekend I live in salisbury Wiltshire and the seller lives in Thurso which is past Scotland so a long way anyway he has asked me to put money into western union and draw it out in Preston where were due to meet he wants me to put 4000 in there but only to be drawn out by me so he can't get to my money at all its only me who can get it and I got to send him a pic of the deposit and he is going to do the same just so he's got some proof I'm going to turn up as he don't want a wasted trip neither do I what do you think scam or not HELP

largeSteve 22 January 2013 12:45 AM

Past Scotland? :D

Sounds a bit odd, why not just give him a small deposit?

foskit 22 January 2013 12:49 AM

That's what I said I'll put 500 into western union and just waiting for a reply, I have never used them before the couple I'm buying the car from are 60 years old they sound really nice or am I just being suckerd in to a scam like a idiot

largeSteve 22 January 2013 12:54 AM

To me a deposit that covers any out of pocket expenses for their trip to the meeting place would be enough, I wouldn't risk anymore. Western union always seems to be dodgy to me, don't know why:wonder:

busby330 22 January 2013 12:55 AM

tbh i would rather do it by paypal pay the fees then at least your protected

foskit 22 January 2013 12:58 AM

Ill wait for them to reply and go from there I know it sounds dodgy and can't afford to get Ripped off for 4000 but they did say they will travel down and it's a 8 hour drive and fly back sounds to good to be true

largeSteve 22 January 2013 01:01 AM

They sound a bit to keen to me mate, I wouldn't risk it, is there owt nearer?

foskit 22 January 2013 01:08 AM

Yeah they do seem very keen but in their emails they sound genuine not sure wot to do the car is for my misses and to say she wants it is a understatement ill wait to hear back from them and go from there I think

Oldun 22 January 2013 07:26 AM

I run my own business and would never get involved with Western Union AT ALL.
I see some problems here.I would be concerned that it's a set-up.
Walk away, do not transfer money!!!
It's been done before..

Send him a pic of the deposit and the cash will be gone before you get to Preston.

+1

I would be amazed if you ever get your money back.

Walk away.

lordharding 22 January 2013 08:00 AM

Don't touch it with a barge pole
Couple in their sixties
Mmm

Couple of Nigerian scammers maybe l
Walk away

No one else uses that form of payment

Maz 22 January 2013 08:04 AM

Are you completely bereft of any sense?! Sorry to be so blunt but I'd pay a bit more and look a little closer to home. The whole thing seems very suspect, I wouldn't put a penny through Western Union.

cookstar 22 January 2013 08:45 AM

WTF? Never in a million years would I dream of doing that.

As above, paypal maybe to cover travel expenses (at a push). But nothing more.

Why not ask if there are any members in the Thurso area who can view the car for you ?

Tidgy 22 January 2013 09:38 AM

I would spend about 2 nanoseconds considering using WU before deciding against.

No way would i ever use the place, scammers paradise. paypal or cash deposited stright into a bank to confirm its real.

hodgy0_2 22 January 2013 09:48 AM

common scam

g7prs 22 January 2013 09:48 AM

Arrange for him to meet you at a bank? Find a local branch of your bank and arrange to be able to withdraw that amount.

g7prs 22 January 2013 09:50 AM

Any link to the advert?

hodgy0_2 22 January 2013 09:51 AM

Don't use wu

Hi mate I've been selling a scooby engine and a gearbox on eBay I had to Peaple from Russia and Poland interested in my parts they wanted me to use Weston union I found out it was a big scam not many Peaple use Weston union anymore so be careful go the PayPal way or cash a lot of dodgy fookers out there :thumb:

Gear Head 22 January 2013 11:17 AM

The reason scammers use WU is because they require little or no form of ID to use their services.

MDS_WRX 22 January 2013 11:34 AM

Of course it's a scam, and a pretty poor one at that.

Put the advert link up and we can all buy it from them :)

If you send him a copy of the deposit slip he will be able to get the money out and you'll never hear from him again. A well known Nigerian scam. Walk awaaaay.
