1 day 17 hours ago I reset the router as the connection speed had dropped to about 1400 Mbps (never done this before) and speed tests were all up to 1Mbps. Normally I get 6.5Mbps IP profile and speed tests about 6.0Mbps.

Council have been doing ditch digging around the road and found the BT cable in the verge in several places, one area cutting through its outer casing and kinking it.

BT Openreach are having a look at it, but aren't interested in the slow broadband. BT who are my ISP are not interested in a possible link between slow speeds and ditch works and two days ago reset my IP profile, but it seems stuck on 1Mbps from the above, but the connection speed is back up. Speed tests now are about 0.7Mbps which although my previous connection wasn't fast by fibre or cable standards was very decent for ADSL, it is like going back a decade.

Any guidance whether the connection speed being 7.68Mbps and the above info reflects whether the line is likely to be physically damaged slowing the broadband and how long to wait before ringing India and being told to do things that have already been tried?

I think it's a stuck profile as your line stats would suggest the line is capable of more speed.

I think when you ring them, don't mention the works outside just that you think the profile is stuck

After an hour again on the phone today they passed it up to higher level tech support and I now have a 7Mbps IP and 6.5Mbps download speed. It is puzzling why it needs doing manually.

Stuck BRAS profiles are reasonably common so I wouldn't worry

BRAS profiles usually increase after about 3-4 days. If the sync speed is stable in that time (avoid causing line drops for the time being) then it should increase automatically.

I once got shoved down to a 150kbps profile for a few days. Now *that* was painful.
