GTI-6 vs focus st170
So earlier this year I got my GF a focus ST170 and yesterday I picked up a 306 GT-6, not had time for tests yet but which do you guys think will be faster and more fun ? Initial impression is that the 306 is faster and handles better. I had forgotten how much fun hot hatches can be, on a twisty bumpy road I am pretty sure the GTi-6 will leave my 330 for dust. The best part is that a mint gti-6 with a ton of history cost £900. How on earth can a car that good be that cheap ?

Wifey loved her Phase 1 Gti-6 (the best of the bunch - had all the trimmings, but was pretty much as light as a Rallye)
Only got shot of it when the bottom end finally went with 170k on the clock. Great car though - fab handling and lovely exhaust note. Sh1t electrics, as per all French cars. THe gearbox was sublime - always in the right gear! Shame the 6sp compromised the turning circle. A LOT of car for banger money imho. Would have another one in an instant. |
You still got your 968 Luan ?

i put a k&n induction kit on a gti6 and truth be told, it was the most fantastic sound ive heard from a n/a engine, the noise was incredible!!! as for fastest then my money would be on the pug (i work for ford.....) a little tweak to the torsion bar and some good coilovers and happy days! only thing to be aware of is the cambelt on the gti6's, they dont last long at all.

GTi-6 all day long :) Handling is sublime. The ST170 was never that well received, unlike the Pug.

Still got it, not driven it in over a year needs a new battery and new MOT. The trouble with classic cars is that I feel bad driving it hard as its not like you can rock up to euro car parts and get new stuff. I am going to put it up for sale in May and perhaps look at something newer that I would care less about. I was thinking buy something I could add my NPS kit to seeing as I have had that for years and never used it.

Run it for a few years, and it will owe you nothing - first big bill, bin and get another one Cheap tax too |

Can you let me know if you do come to sell it, not saying I will be in a position but who knows, I love my 944 and think the 968 might give me a little more power, just a thought.

I would guess the Pug as well.
Funny how Pistonheads have had both have featured on Shed Of The Week recently: http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=162 |

I will let you know in may, pretty sure you will love it once you see it, I may be able to do a part ex on the 944 if the price is sensible.

Bangernomics, I have been extolling the virtues for years

Had an ST170; same awesome steering and feel as the vanilla Foci but slow and torque free.
|
The GTI-6 is the better all round car, electrics are not much of a problem, the main issue they suffer is the loom to the door which is a rather crap french design, you need to replace said connector at £75 each from the dealer and then have them fitted/wired up.
Watch for the rear beams also, they have a tendency to sag with age, costs a couple of hundred quid to get them rebuilt so avoid lowered cars as most do it incorrectly and this puts more strain on the rear beam. Tony:) |
Best of both worlds.....Squeeze a GTI6 engine in a 205 GTI :thumb:

Bar the ****ty plastic on the lights that car is about perfect. Trouble is that the classic hot hatches make me want to drive them like I stole them. My 330 just feels like grandads car next to a gti-6 with K+N on the front and something else loud at the rear.

Owned a Rallye for a couple of years, different trim etc but essentially the same.
Great cars and eventually turned mine into a track car. Can pick them up for peanuts now - great cheap fun! |
I loved my old '6' ... Unfortunately I had to part with it due to the ever growing family.
|
gti6 beats hands down, trouble with mine was, crap turning circle cos of the 6 speed,(it was the first 6 speed car i had,and put me off a cupra 6 speed, because i thought all 6 speeds were like that, but theyre not)
My clutch was incredibly stiff, seemed to drink a bit of petrol(might be because i was hooning it around once i had the induction kit and exhaust fitted) General niggly french things that you tend to deal with, like the window plastic clips breaking, and electrics |
