Rusty spare wheel well
 

Any ideas what should I do with this:

Wire brush, repaint with anti-rust, then spray it?
Or just wire brush and blue Hammerite.

Blue hammerite=great idea, what about prevention? There was a fair bit of water in there when I looked at first, also any tips to get a perfect circle when I paint the stuff on?

Make a stencil around a plate or something from cardboard?

First job is to find out why there was water in there.

Mine leaked like that as well take the bung out and all the water will drain out then instead of collecting

Where's it coming in?

Usual suspects in order of popularity, and what to do:

Rear lights, (remove and reseat on Carafax)
Spoiler, (as above, ensure a circle round each bolt hole and the wiring hole)
Boot seal, (as above)
Rear screen, (sorry, but this one costs, if the seal is gone it's screen out and refit)
Vents, (low down in the inner wings, they stick open, remove debris and shut them)

Circle: just use masking tape, it's under your spare wheel anyway;) (DO leave for a good long time BEFORE refitting wheel, or place plastic sheet between)

Not sure we're it's coming in. carpet wasn't damp, I drove through some epic puddles last week on the back roads? Is there a drain plug underneath somewhere?

If carpet not wet then not dropping from spoiler bolts, more likely vents in side or even check grommets in floor where wires go through to bumper. Looks like its been in there a while though to go rusty.

I'm assuming the vents are behind the carpet at the side of boot? It sort of looks like there is gaps in the plate which is welded in the middle

But those vents are low down on each inner wing. If water were coming in there, it would first have to fill up both wells on both sides.
Has it?

first of all,throw away your spair wheel because its way to heavy.then instead of going to the shops for some paint,take out your angle grinder.and do this.

when you have cut out your old rusty boot floor,get some ally composite in any colour you choose.i choose black to match my car:D
then cut to shape and fit,and ho ho ho there you have a nice shiny boot floor.

No only sign of water was in that main well.

Look good bigarf but a bit extreme for a daily

Any way got on it today with some wire brush bits for the cordless, zinc primer, 02c and finished it off with clear wax oil, (all purchased from a local body shop for £23). Still no sign of where the water came from so il just keep an eye on it.
