My wife is planning to do a 300 mile cycle in Cuba next year to raise money for sick babies (always good to tug at the heart strings.) She needs to raise 2500.00 in sponsorship. Anyone been involved in something like this before who would have useful advice (not about the bicycle :rolleyes: ) Any suggestion as to how to raise the money, short of getting 2500 people to give you a quid?

You need to send letters to as many local large business as poss for sponsorship. It never hurts to get the local paper involved to drum up support or even local radio. I suggest you go to as many Scooby meets as possible and take a tin with you too!!

no ideas im affraid FB but a genuine question....

when ppl go and do something- like a bike ride- does the cost of the event not detract from the money raised? i have a work collegue that does similar stuff and i always wondered if it was not easier to raise less money with less overheads?

Tiggs - She is paying for flights and accomodation herself. These are subsidised by airlines and the hotels they are staying in, so all the money raised goes to charity (well it get sent to charity HQ - after that.... who knows)

Pixiegirl - good suggestions. There only seems to be 2 scoobynetters over here, so I think BEW might get fed up eventually :D

As everyone says, papers, local press, supermarket entrances (with their permission of course), Schools PTA assoic. anything and everything including work.

I did one in nepal and Tiggs mate, good question, one that i put a charity some time ago and they get heavily discounted fares the trip costs them around £500 (average trip to most anywhere)as such £2k profit / donations or more per person 20-30 people ina group and their around for another year !!

Seriously though.....my uncle did a sponsored bike ride for The Downs Syndrome Association in Egypt a couple of years back.....I can ask him for advice and get back to you :)
