Which Headlight Bulbs, Blue Tint?
 

Hi

One of my dipped beam headlight bulbs on my Blobeye has just gone and I need to replace it. I went to Halfords and the brightest (120% brighter than standard) ones were on offer, buy one get one free.

The thing is that they only had blue tint. They don't seem to do the non blue tint in that same brightest bulb. I haven't currently got blue tint on any bulbs.

My questions are:

1. Is blue tint better than non blue tint and if so why?
2. Can you get blue tint bulbs for the spot lights as well, because it is probably going to look odd if I keep the non blue tints on the spots?
3. Is there any difference between Halfords bulbs and the genuine subaru ones?

I know these are probably silly questions but I haven't needed to consider these things on my older cars and I'd rather get it right first time round.

1. No. Any blue tint, you are losing usable light.

2. Spot lights? do you mean FOG lights, or do you ACTUALLY have driving lights? If the answer is the former, forget it, why on EARTH would you EVER use them? :rolleyes:
If it's the latter, use the same type of bulbs as in the headlights.

3. Halfords bulbs are made by GE (General Electric) they are every bit as good, and probably better than the ones in the car when it was built.

Why do all the brand new BMWs and Audis have these blue tint bulbs now?

By spot lights I mean the spot lights that come on when you use high beam on the headlights.

You probably mean HID or Xenon lights? Styrictly spe4aking, they aren't blue tinted, the colours you see are a feature of the projector lenses used.

OK, if thery are doing that, they may be driving lights, (Spotlights are similar, but with a pencil beam, driving lights have a beam more like a headlight main beam).
Check the MAKE of the lights.

If they ARE driving, (or spot ;)), they will be branded hella, Cibie, PIAA or similar.
If they are branded SUBARU, they are foglights, and, to remain legal, should not be wired as they are.

If driving lights, use the same brand/power bulbs as you buy for the headlights and you'll be fine.

Don't be tempted by so called high wattage bulbs: they often produce less usable light than a standard bulb due to not being made accurately.
And DON'T spend huge sums on PIAA bulbs...there are others out there that do just the same for 1/4 the money or less;)

A better bet is a pair of uprated bulbs, Philips, GE, Osram Hella, Ring.

Less scatter and pass any MoT. No probs with the Dibble either.
