I am currently going through and upgrading the standard ICE in my scooby and feel like I have walked into a mine field of choice!!!!!!!!

I have a head unit, rear speakers and it looks like I will go for the infinity front speakers, but when it comes to woofers and amps I am getting a head ache. Any recommendations on what is good but not wildly esxpensive would be greatly appreciated.

What head unit do you have?? if you dont have one I would recommend a kenwood mp6090r as they are Usefull..

Upgrade your cabling to the front speakers at the same time as fitting a set of component speakers up front.

Choose possibly a four channel amp and then bridge one channel to run a 10 / 12" sub and then use the other two channels on the front speakers....

I wouldnt bother doing anything with rear speakers as it will just drag the sound stage backwards.. Mind you you could allways put some filters on the rears and keep them for rear fill.

Make sure you spend some decent money on power cabling, rca's and sound proofing.

Where about in the country are you, then we can possibly recommend somewhere / someones car to listen.

How much do you have to spend?

I did an install on my bros golf last october:

phoenix gold 4150 4 channel - £120
JL12w0 sub - £80
cables - 70 quid
boston acoustics fs series 6.5 components - £160

He already had a pioneer md hu that i fitted a while ago, and the set up sounds very good. Spent 20 quid on mdf and 20 quid on carpet and built a box that held the sub on one side (35 litres) and the amp, recessed, on the other. two channels bridged for the sub, other two running the fronts. Left the rears on the hu output for a bit of rear fill if needed.

I'm shortly to be doing the same in my scoob, but with pg zx450, 12w6 and focal fronts. Hunt around in the classifieds and you'll find some right bargains...

Have to agree with the choice of amp for a budget amp there. It's superb for the money. Personally, I'd go for an american name rather than a japanese name, so Phoenix Gold is an excellent choice.

The BA stuff is good too. Smooth sounding, and a nice "round" sound.

An important point is do not forget or under-estimate the cost of cables! 70 quid may be a bit light in all seriousness! Maplins is a good, fairly cheap supplier of the right stuff.

Cheers guys, I have just bought the Pioneer DEH6400R Head unit and some JBL 6inch rear speakers as I don't have the time to install 6x9's at the moment. Where can I get the Amp and Sub from??? Usual web sites or specialist suppliers??

Maplins for the cable:

5m 4 gage - 25 quid
speaker cable 3/m 36 quid
RCA 5m £4/m 20 quid
RCA plugs 10/set (good ones)

Of course they do a kit for about £30 that has this lot in, but not as good and doesn't allow for extra power if you want to upgrade.

Also fuse holder £10 + fuse £2
Distributor for boot £12
Earth 1m £5

So i suppose it was a bit more than 70 quid then!!
