Sensible with a twist. Volvo v70 t6 anyone?
 

Possibly thinking of getting rid of my hawkeye and going sensible but still with a bit of fun. Anyone any views on the above car? Looking at 300 horses still and 4wd but with a decent engine still. I may even go more sensible and get a diesel though for towing

Ps its still just a thought as I'm also considering upgrading all my suspension on the scoob and keeping that at least another year

I have a volvo v50 d5. An amazing motor and very capable plus 40mpg is a big bonus. Never going to handle like a scoob but hey ho its horses for courses

Yes I believe the D5 is a brilliant engine. Not that bothered by handling to be honest. I'm leaning a bit towards the D5 now as we also have a caravan so its ideal for towing instead of the wifes 4x4. May go see what they'll offer me part ex for mine

dad had a v70 d5, very nice, big and bit of a barge as expected lol, but comfortable and as said decent mpg

look for a nice v50 d5 r-design, 2008 onwards thats the spec to go for can be bought at reasonable money, cheap tax also.

I used to work for volvo , the s60R or V70R was a cracking car 300hp, suspension settings adjustable on dash , massive brakes ..

I went on a volvo track day and they took us out in v70 t6 !! monster car ..

Almost as exciting as a mondeo in the corners ?

Yes I'm thinking of posting my hawk up for a week maybe. I think its worth somewhere around the 10k mark due to the work I've had done. Only needs a few things to make it mint. I've seen some nive volvos now on the net so I'm very tempted

Have I missed something? You're "not bothered about handling" but if you dont get a new car you will upgrade the suspension on the Hawkeye? Just work out exactly what criterior you have and go from there so there is no regret 2 months down the line.

Yes but it's two totally different cars, you don't by a scoob due to its comfort, when he has said the handling is a bit different from the scoob then that's what I mean by I ain't bothered, simply that the other car will be softer. If I do decide to keep the sti then I will upgrade the suspension as the standard sti suspension is known for not being to soft is it

Have you been able to test a V70 yet?

I've driven quite a few Volvos and thought that the Mk1 V70 was far better than the Mk2, although haven't yet been in the latest Mk3. I found the auto box to be absolute poo in the Mk2, so if you haven't driven one yet then I suggest it is worth a drive to see if they improved things in the latest generation.

Of course the 5 cylinder engines are lovely too, lots of torque. Every now and again we make an 800 mile journey in a day across Europe, and in all seriousness I think you would need to start looking at a Bentley to find a significantly better vehicle for such a journey.

Not sure if they've resolved the dpf issue on the mk3, but I very nearly bought a mk2 V70 D5. It was a lovely car to drive, and the engine was a cracking unit but being post 2006 model it had the dpf, which put me off because they can struggle to regenerate and go into limp mode if you aren't doing sufficient mileage in them, and they also start filling the sump up with diesel which isn't ideal.

Went for a V50 2.0d cos it didn't have dpf, but its not half the car the V70 was. Only bad thing (other than dpf) about the V70 was the turning circle.

As mentioned above autos not great and can be problematic, manuals are pretty strong though and nice and smooth.
