Sorry to admit being absolutely clueless, :rolleyes: but I just wondered if anyone could tell me which pipe in the pic I squirt the brake cleaner into to clean my boost solenoid?

Try all 3. Best if you can give the solenoid a 12V supply so that you can switch it either way and ensure it's completely cleaned.

What model/year is your car. I have a 98spec STI V4 and am looking to clean the boost solenoid valve.
Are you having problems ?

Oh so familier. I have had the same problem for 6 months and it's still doing it after plug change, boost cleaning, coil packs, air system check and clean, fuel filter and oil change, ecu change and putting in a new engine!! Boost now showing 0.5 bar constant so i give up aslong as it's running.:D

I have exactly the same prob, was told at PE a couple of weeks ago that it was the cat.....

That pressure of 0.5 bar is the wastegate opening pressure on a std car.
So sounds like something is amiss.

As a quick check, see if any of the hoses associated with the boost solenoid / turbo outlet / wastegate actuator are crimped in any way i.e. with a tiewrap or whatever. has been know to happen before......

Wonder if that's what is wrong with mine?
I have no boost gauge yet, but the turbo clearly doesn't boost sometimes. Moody car!! My current theory is either the wastegate or the solenoid.

It's a UK 96 turbo. All help greatfully received... Please - it's lame getting overtaken by XR3is. :D

Do not give this valve a 12v supply as it receives a duty
signal and not permanant 12v .connect the green check connector
under the dash ,this will activate the boost control valve to open
and close and so you should be able to clean it .

It's a 95 WRX, 260ps model.
Strangely, since having my restrictive (3 silencers! :eek: )FGK exhaust swapped for a straight through centre pipe and Blitz backbox on saturday, the car's been boosting like a trooper! 14psi peak, 13psi held. Strange! :confused:

Thanks for the help everyone - mine seems to be fixed after cleaning the solenoid and WD40ing the surrounding electrical connectors.

However, it is a bit of an intermittent problem since it worked last night, and didn't this morning...

Hope it lasts this time.

What voltage is the duty signal that the solenoid gets?

I find my boost creaps around quite a bit infact yesterday while having a "spirited" drive to Micheldever tyres I had it reach a peak of just over 1bar :eek: It depends quite heavily on weather conditions etc. I'm running a SS BB and DP with Blitz and I've ordered a Dawes + afr meter. Hopefully the boost will setle down :)

Mine's a 95 WRX. The boost levels seem to vary depending on what mood the car's in! Most of the time it peaks and holds 12psi, sometimes 11, sometimes as low as 10, and occasionally it peaks at 14 and holds 13 (I think the latter one is what it should be doing? :confused: )
I just thought I'd try cleaning the solenoid to see if it would help. The car runs fine apart from this variance in boost levels, and no-one I've spoken to (several specialists) seems to have a clue!
