Apple day again.

Just realised it's Apple announcement time again 6pm.

iPad kind of mini, iMac refresh, Mac Mini refresh… more.

Apple TV has been updated with a live feed for the event.

brendy76 23 October 2012 04:23 PM

Apple announcements seems to have gone a little stale since mr bad personal hygiene passed away.

stevebt 23 October 2012 05:39 PM

If the ipad mini comes in at around £200 as most of the websites are saying I think I will be buying a couple for chrimbo :)

DJ Dunk 23 October 2012 06:51 PM

Likewise :)

Ant 23 October 2012 06:53 PM

Well they finally announced the new ipad and the 7.9" ipad mini, I wonder how that will affect the prices of the ipad 3 with a new one alrady being rolled out.

Ant 23 October 2012 07:14 PM

$329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model

TonyBurns 23 October 2012 07:23 PM

Then look at this...

http://www.booksnreview.com/articles...cut-to-199.htm

Still the new imac looks interesting, and pretty thin, heat woes still worry, is that why its underclocked?

BBC have the pricing up for the ipad mini (a little more than most expected but still under 300 quid)

Tony:)

Ant 23 October 2012 07:49 PM

Anyone see the bit on the fusion drive, where 128gb flash and 1tb drive and uses the flash media like a cache. Looks brilliant

Markus 23 October 2012 07:50 PM

Have to say I wasn't expecting such updates to the full size iPad. the A6X will be a bit quick.

iPad mini is pretty much what everyone expected, price point is $329, would have liked to have seen it at $299, but it will likely sell an absolute fcuk ton.

JackClark 23 October 2012 08:53 PM

All good I'd say.

Time to jump on the upgrade train for me, my 06 iMac is still a thing of beauty but it's out of sync, boxed and better than new, it should fetch a few quid towards a new one.

SirFozzalot 23 October 2012 10:50 PM

New Mac looks nice. :norty:

No optical drive. Not sure if this is a negative for me. Rarely use one I guess with most stuff downloadable now. Only thing I would see that I would miss would being able to transfer music from cd's or to store movies on the hard drive for use over apple tv.

IWatkins 23 October 2012 10:55 PM

iMac looks very nice. Loving the combo physical/flash drive. Photoshop and Final Cut should run nicely on that.

So it's either that or a new Mac Mini. My 2008 Mac Mini is still going strong, but video editing is very slow.

Choices, choices. :)

iPad Mini doesn't do anything for me. Had a 7" tablet, was great, moved on now. I've an iPad2, so will wait for a proper iPad upgrade (4?) before moving again.

Not interested in the 13" MacBook, but I'm never interested in net/note/laptops.

iBooks announcement was also interesting.

It's not a new concept:

SwissTony 24 October 2012 08:01 AM

the iPad mini , nice but not for me. my ipad 2 is perfect for me

mac mini, nope my mac mini model does the job of being a media centre perfectly fine thank you.

macbook pro 13 ", too small for my needs

iMac. Now we are talking !! my 24" 2005 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth and whilst the size is good, I think a 21" will do the trick.

Of course it's not a new concept, but it is the first time the Hardware and OS have been integrated into an iMac and available with a tick in the box.

ScoobyDoo555 24 October 2012 09:00 AM

Nice toys. I'm a little narked that I've JUST bought an Ipad 3, but thankfully, it's a work toy.
But hey ho, cant complain too much, as I've been struggling to find a real use for it :D (kind of the answer to a question nobody asked!)

BUT the new iMac is worth investigating further :)

It really isn't a new concept at all, some Intel chipsets have had this capability for quite some time. Stick in a big mechanical HDD and small FLASH drive, configure it in the BIOS, and to the operating system it looks like a single hard drive just faster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Response_Technology

And as for the iPad Mini £270 vs. the Nexus 7 at £190 :cuckoo: Of course it will sell in droves to the Apple indoctrinated

Did you not read any of what jack posted that you quoted?

Yes, and all I'm trying to put across is that this is just a bit of Apple marketing spin around already existent technology but of course at some stage they'll try to claim it as their own.

Ant 24 October 2012 11:01 AM

I wouldn't say it's marketing spin, just highlighting new features they're adding to their hardware.
How else would anyone know about it if they didn't bring it up?

The iPad 4 was announced yesterday, ok, 4th Generation iPad if we're talking in Apple speak. Upgraded processor (A6X) lightning connector and I think updated LTE. So not a massive upgrade for those with 3's, but perhaps for those on a 2 it might feel a lot quicker.

At least one store in the US is offering those who purchased a 3 within the last 30 days a free upgrade (think it's free) to the 4. It isn't as yet a full corporate policy, but I would not be overly shocked to see orders already in the supply chain getting upgraded for free, as they do with Macs, and possibly this store's offer will be expanded to all locations too.

Neanderthal 24 October 2012 11:24 AM

Forgive my ignorance, but are these iMacs capable of playing games like BF3 etc?
Traditionally this is where they were always compromised.

I've seen the flash/physical combo in disk arrays in the IT industry for years now. It's great where you need extremely fast writes to disk.

I was looking forward to an iPad-mini at £200 but think they've shot themselves in the foot with the pricing.

Also worth a look:

Surprised about the iPad upgrade. Thought it was an annual thing with apple. Are they going 6 monthly now? :wonder:

I see it as a plan to get more devices out there with the new lightning socket. They can't really be seen to be selling the iPhone 5 with the new socket saying "this is the future" but at the same time be selling the iPad with the old 30pin style. Why they couldn't just say from now on all new iPads will be coming with the lightning socket I do not know.

JackClark 24 October 2012 04:50 PM

Wise move, everyone would prefer one cable.

My iPad 2 is still powerful enough for me but the new ones sure are pretty.

Buy a usb drive, I have had one for years and it hardly gets used as memory sticks or portable hard drives are used far more.

I have finally got rid of my cd player in the car as well and its just sd card or ipod/usb. Welcome to the future :)

I have to admit after using both android and io6 as far as getting a cheaper tablet for browsing the web and the occasional game the Nexus 7 is king so far.
