Need big help on turbo!

Changed my turbo for a bigger TD05 20g on my blobeye wrx. But every time I test it, I get a explosion of oil and no power at all!! Help me please!!

Weren't you the guy who had trouble getting your oil feed pipe onto the new bigger turbo?

It wouldn't reach?
If so, perhaps go down the braided oil feed route?

JonWright_ 21 October 2012 04:35 PM

Nope the feed is fine

Was Turbo an unknown quantity?

Used turbo or new? Badly worn unit and extra boost on worn seals and bearings can push oil under huge pressure anywhere.

Under the bonnet around the turbo area. The turbo is brand new

OK, so the Turbocharger should not be suspect but, is it over boosting ? Who did the work?

Could be anything but, I had an oil covered engine experience once.

Sometime ago I bought a very well cared for Rover 620ti from a previous owner which had 'problems'. He had precious little knowledge of these things and entrusted the car to someone with limited experience of these things who I suspect he removed the boost cut-off and upped the boost. The previous owner was not aware of this and he replaced this car with a Trophy Blue MG-ZT-T. Probably thought his car was 'chipped' ..' appens ..

I have had a number of these cars and this very standard looking car immediately felt and was quicker than a standard car. Much quicker. Previous to that, when I got it running well again and drove it around 1000 miles at ordinary go with the flow speeds. Then, when nobody was around I took it for a fast run and used full boost. Car flew but obviously something was wrong somewhere as after a few miles there was a tink-tink tink sound from the engine. It still ran well but, after another fastish run the little noise got louder.

Lifting the bonnet, this is what I found :~

Oil everywhere. Although I did not realise it at the time and the clueless previous owner obviously did not know what was wrong, but, when I got the engine management ECU checked by someone with the correct kit, all was revealed.

Well not so short a story but removing the cylinder head revealed over-boost piston and ring damage leading to over pressurised piston blow by which literally forced sump oil up the drain passageways into the camshaft area and out through the various engine breathers. Pressure strong enough to blow off the main breather allowing oil everywhere.

I contacted the previous owner with my findings. There were other 'iffy' areas too. I simply then advised him never to entrust any car he has to the outfit which worked on his Rover turbo.

There again, without looking at your car, remote diagnosis is very difficult. Of course it could be something much more simple for you. Hope so.

- Where did the turbo come from ?
- Is it from a trusted seller ?
- Are you sure all pipes are fixed properly and securely ?
- The one underneath can be a pain in the arse, is that secure ?
- Have you cleaned all the oil away and taken for a very quick drive to see where the oil is coming from ?
- How much oil are we talking about ?
- who fitted it and mapped it, was there an issue during mapping ?
- how much boost is it making ?

have you had the car mapped for new turbo??
and have you got a boost guage fitted if so whats it boost too?

L.J.F 21 October 2012 08:39 PM

I am guessing it's not mapped yet and the turbo was bought off Ebay. What engine and gearbox are you running?

Check the breather pipe at the top of your heads on the engine....as above this happened on mine whilst on track.....the cause was a cracked piston:cry:

Try putting the turbo you took off it back on and take it for a test drive see what happens
