Inside Googles Data Center - Finland

Some might have seen it on Sky News already but worth a look. An amazing facility.

Makes my 4 terabyte server stored in the wardrobe in the spare room look pretty insignificant :)

Nahh, they've just bought a crap company that they need to offload...

boxst 19 October 2012 04:46 PM

Well, they went from $750 -> $700 as they didn't have such a strong quarter.

Makes some of the server rooms i've worked in look disgraceful. I think Google's redifines 'best practice'! The engineers have bicycles to get around on it's that vast :lol1:

In my old job, one of our clients was Accantia and we were responsible for maintaining their cooling system for the server room that managed the workstations and the whole production facilities on that site.

The cooling units was external to this mystical room, so we never allowed in there, with the only exception was to check that the sensor were measuring the room temps correctly.

Being a old school geek I had this image of loads of server towers/racks, tape backup systems, halon fire control etc. So was pretty excited to have a nosey.

Imagine my disappointment to walk into a 100m2 size room expecting to find it full of IT goodness only to find a single standard server rack in the middle and a small workstation in the corner.

Talk about overspecced cooling, this was a reverse flow cooling system, where cold air is blown through a false floor and extracted at the ceiling. The cooling units are at the side of the room which house the controls, fans, filters and compressors...two of them, one as a backup all dedicated to keep this room at 20 degrees. FFS all that server needed to keep itself cool was an open window and a desk fan :lol1: The average wall mount or cassete A/C unit would have done the same job for a tenth of the cost (same with running costs too).
