Hawkeye STI - now time for a 'mini' build!

I bought my 55 plate Hawk STI about 5 weeks ago with 63k on the clock.

It had on it a prodrive sports cat, H&S 2.5" system, BC coilovers and a front splitter on it. So as an 'out of the box' car for me, it was great!

It was running probably about 320bhp.

A trip to the 'ring was on the table and with my 400bhp Mini being in pieces still I had no choice but to get Simon at JGM up to come up and do a me a map having had a 3" Miltek decat fitted, a Cosworth baffle plate, a new Defi Advanced system and a service!

Simon came up and having heard me mention the 'ring mapped it to a safe 1.4 bar peak (1.2 held). Car made about 360bhp which was plenty quick enough for the daily hack!

Anyway, being more than aware of the Head Gasket issues and chocolate pistons, a group of us took off for a blast to the 'ring :)

The car did well - til the second lap! With this being a closed day, we had access to the final straight ... !

Hitting the limiter in 6th down the straight did me no favours it would seem. Cooling down after this lap I saw the coolant temp just rise a little - so I came off boost and then the cooling issues really started :(

Pressurised coolant system - water over flowing everywhere :(

I managed to limp the car home where it's been sat on the driveway ever since.
Anyway, a few emails back and forwards to Alan Jeffrey and I've decided to build the engine up and give it some more power :)

So the plan is:

Mahle pistons with 0.025" overbore.
K1 rods
ACL Race bearings
RCM oil pump
ARP head stud kit
Cosworth head gaskets
Fully overhaul the heads, and balance the assembly
New water pump
New cam belt

In addition to this, my plan is to go SC46, APS front mount and Syvecs with maps for low boost, high boost and meth :)

I'll post some pics up soon of the Defi install (it's the work that people with OCD would appreciate) and my new Clarion double din Sat Nav system too :)

Car goes away on friday and, all being well, will be collected next friday :)

Sorry hear about the your engine, but at least you are sorted with new build, which will take more than before

Engine spec looks good and really I only can vouch for Syvecs, great ECU and with sensor pack(oil pressure, oil temp and Fuel pressure) from TimH@JTi you or mapper can set the engine trips, which can save your engine

Good luck with your project

Cannot wait for this to be ready! Cannot thank the guys for what they have done already :) A new organic clutch will be going in too - 63k on the old one, so time for something new me thinks!

Time for some updates - Alan has been busy working on the car whilst I've been sorting out the MINI.

Sorry for all the pictures - I've not updated this thread for a while.

Alan's work is nothing short of perfect. Cannot believe the attention to detail :)

Just to clear up before anyone jumps on in and says it, lol, the Spec C inlet manifold had to be dropped in favour of in house modified, TGV deleted bodies.
They had the butterflies removed and were welded internally to blank the holes left behind by the shaft that runs through them. The extremities that usually mount the motors and sensors were then removed allowing for a much neater install of the Perrin 3 inch intake and they were then painted black.

As someone said before, spec changes aplenty !

LeeP 30 November 2012 10:39 PM

Thanks Martyn :)

I had to figure out what your dad was talking about at first but now understand what was changed and why!

looking great mate

LeeP 12 December 2012 10:18 AM

Well sunday night, me and a friend jumped on a train to Plymouth. 8 hours later we got there, had a few beers in the hotel and got some shut eye ready for the long drive back.

Alan collected us from the hotel at 11.30 the next day and after 30 minutes going over the car I went out for a drive with Martyn.

It's great to be back in the Scoob! It's currently limited to 0.5 bar and 4500rpm for running in but it's done over 400 miles already. I'll be changing the oil again this week and then giving Martyn a call to book in for final mapping :D

LeeP 12 December 2012 10:18 AM

The attention to detail in the build is second to none. Everything from the intercooler piping, every nut and bolt being replaced with new, the front mount install looks sock - absolutely over the moon with it :)

chet123 12 December 2012 11:22 AM

good thread - cheers for the insight

craigybaby 12 December 2012 11:24 AM

Happy days mate I bet the drive home was nice :)

frayz 12 December 2012 12:20 PM

Lovely attention to detail there guys.

Great job :thumb:

MrNoisy 12 December 2012 03:40 PM

Good read mate :thumb:
So which turbo did you go for in the end - was it the SC50 as per your last post, and what's the expected output of the engine being a 2.5?
