Broken down

My shabby car broke down today.

It is a MY98 subaru legacy GL. It was slow to start almost as if it had to prime the fuel through. When it went it ran fine for 10 mins which got me half way to work where the revs started dying at about 60mph. I pulled over, the revs died away to almost nothing and it stalled.

It then started off the key but died again a few hundred yards along the road. I got a friend to tow me to work where I left it.

I just got it through an MOT by redoing all the brakes and bought it new tax so it would be good to get another year out of it. What could be wrong?

Cheers

Fuel Pump failing?

CHUCKblue 14 October 2012 10:24 PM

I did think that. It is the standard pump on the car and still makes a hum when I turn the key. Does that mean it still works.

I have the old pump I upgraded from my bugeye wrx. Would that fit?

Cheers

Yes, it means it's making a noise ..... does the noise stop once the fuel line is up to pressure?

Could be fuel pressure regulator if it doesn't stop pumping ...

I think the hum stops after a couple of seconds. Does that mean its building up pressure as it should and then cutting out?

I'll check tomorrow.

Would the wrx pump fit?

I would say the fuel pressure side is doing its job then, including the pump (but, it may not be pumping as it was?).

Not sure how well the WRX Pump would fit ...... doesn't need to fit to test it on the car though (just secure it well).

I had a similar issue on a Honda Accord, steadily got worse till it wouldnt go at all; it was the fuel filter and fuel line from the tank to filter.
It would get enough fuel through to start but not enough flow left to run.
