Knock, what to do?

Today I noticed my knock warning light flash on for second (engine management light as I have a simtek) whilst going in to the higher rev band. The car is a 04 WRX running 346bhp.

Question is what can I do to prevent further possible damage? Talk to a mapper?

Any help appreciated:thumb:

Cheers

could be a bad batch of fuel if it`s not happened before and you haven't changed anything

No haven't changed anything, did have that issue a month or so ago with one of my injectors getting stuck open due to a problem with the ecu but that's all sorted now.

What RPM was this? It could be a shift light. If its det, then the light will flash fast a few times.

O really? I can't say without going out and trying it but its the higher rev band which I rarely use. Just happen to come across a nice bit of Tarmac whilst on the B roads. It's definitely just one flash and not multiple ones. I'll give the mapper a call on Monday and see if he set it up for shifting, I thought it was only for knock...

Well just to be on the safe side dont belt it until you have confirmation. Pretty sure its a shift light

On Simtec the CEL light can be set as a shift light. I had mine turned off as it was terrifying!

Don't think I'll be out in it until next week now anyway but I'll drop my mapper a call to confirm what it is.

Yeah it is a little worrying, if that is the case I may do the same!

When you say Simtek is this the "old" Simtek which is now AlcaTek?

If so then as mentioned the check engine light has two functions.

One is as a det alarm, if its triggered in that mode it will flash repeatedly whilst the ecu is recording excessive knock sensor readings and will be "on" when this is present and off when not.

the second use is for a shift light, if this feature is enabled then a then it will come on as a solid light not flashing and typically be on between 6000 and 6500 rpm depending on your mapper.

cheers

Thanks Bob, I'm sure that must be it. And yes it's the old simtek, have yet to update it. The rpm level sounds about right when it comes on.
