Chips
Was just thinking a bag of chips was 40p when i was a kid, it's now around 1.30ish.
Will prices ever come down, just the same way they tend to go up with inflation etc???? |
Nope they will Never go down.
|
Bit like everything else really

A bag of chips was a shilling when I was a kid. A Mars bar was fourpence.
When I was 18 and in the RAF, I could get three pints and a packet of crisps for a quid. I could get a night out in the pub plus Chinese takeaway, all for a fiver. (I'm 54) |
Anyway, salad is much better for you
|
Chips weren't invented when I was a lad. :)

In 1975, Nick Mason paid £37,000 for his Ferrari 250 GTO. Cheap as chips
|
When I were a lad......chips were 4d or 6d, my dad used to send me in for them 'cos I was little and skinny, I got more chips for 4d than he would have got for 6d.
4d is less than 2p, and 6d is 2.5p:eek: A fish was 1/3d, around 5.5-6p, and a pie was 9d, less than 4p. I STILL earnestly believe that the true start of inflation in this country came when we converted to decimal currency and the government of the day did NOTHING to stop profiteering. I mean........would anyone born pre decimal currency actually pay 12/- for a Cadbury's Flake? or £1 6/- for a bag of chips? Mind, over here I'm paying nearly as much for a lb of meat for the farm dog as I USED to pay per lb for fillet steak.........:( |
When I was in school pie was 3.14159265359........ and it still is. :)
|
A small pie and chips was 5p when I was in school
|
I just paid £1.50 for a bag of chips :(
|
Hope it was large one!
|
Hadn't had a bag of chips in years, until we were out with the kids last weekend, and my wife made a suggestion that we should grab a bag of chips - bag of chips in the town where we live £2.20.
kinda puts paid to the saying cheap as chips!!!! |
I can remember when chips were 12p a portion.
And when Snaps crisps first came out - 2p! But it's all relative to inflation of course. |

HARRY HILL:
"Chiiiips! Chippy chips!" |
I remember getting chips and gravy in a tray for five pence - the chips were four pee and the gravy was free, but you had to buy the tray for a penny to keep it all together.
Yummy :D mb |
How mental did you go for chip shop chips as a nipper - popping into the chippy and buying a portion on your way back from town. The salt n vinegar and the smell!
It was 'exciting' lol. |

It was 'exciting' lol. Awww! This thread is so cool for going back into the times when the chips were cheap. I am loving old times stories. Wait till PS comes in and tells us that he used to buy chips for a farthing :D Easily pleased, aren't we, Tubs? :D I think I'm in a good mood. All this memorylane-ish talk about chips is heartwarming! Not my cup of tea (err......sorry. Not my tray of chips, I mean) these chips are, but I am enjoying the conversation about them. :D |
I'd grab a bag of scratchings from the chippy on my way home from school. Freebies.
We'd walk home together and see who got the best bits. I used to get the occasional chip or piece of fish. Them were the days. Could leave the back door unlocked, neighbours would wander in for a cup of tea and a game of cards. Happy days. Mind you, we didn't have Jimmy Savile as a neighbour. |
