I'd say the new breed of "racing-cars-for-the-road" cult-cars definitely include the Elise, either the new one (2y waiting list) or the hi-po versions released in 2000 (Sport160 and 111-S ; 2nd hand prices are actually going up on these lately!).
The Focus RS and Cosworth should make the list when they are finally released, and I think the new hi-po Peugeot 206 due out soon (180+ hp) might too.
Agree, scoobs and early evos have sadly lost some cult status, and are now lusted after (and purchased arted up) by the nova-brigade.
Still great cars though, so who cares.

Apart from that, CLio V6, 106 GTI. That kind of thing.

Yeah Matt My mate took a ride in your BM last weekend I think!

So did you have a scoob b4, telm e more about your car im interested!

Sam Elassar 19 April 2001 12:55 AM

sorry boys
the scoobs and evos are here to stay. pure and simple they are not going to be beaten in the performance department. and maybe only the focus cosworth that will come close but it depends on the price.

you have all noticed that the new STI7 AND EVO7 have been styled down so they don't look as aggressive. their prices are not really going to go down that quick on them, their technology is far superior to anything on the road so they are going to be the next big thing.
it is like starting all over again, me thinks

sam
my99 next car maybe be sti7, or evo7

Jamie Whitfield 19 April 2001 10:29 AM

OK, so although it grieves us all to admit to it, but it looks like the Scoob and all other Japanese AWD Hot Boxes have had their' day, so what do you reckon is the new cult car, are there any?

Is it the new Elise, even though we cant buy them for about 2 years! What about the X-Type? Do you reckon the FOcus RS will be the one?

I really dont know, as much as I love the Subaru Impreza, it seems that it isn't as ideal an investment that it once was.

To be a cult car, everyone must want one, a lot of people must be able to afford one and I think they should go like s*** off a stick! What do you think the new cult cars are?

andrew6321 19 April 2001 10:43 AM

Not sure I agree with the proposition, but if I was placing a bet, I'd put it on the Skoda Octavia RS, or maybe the new MG/Rover 75 thingy with the 4.6 V8.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Andrew

KickUrRS 19 April 2001 10:51 AM

NAH, NO WAY, EVRY1 NOS THAT ONLY FORD MAKES RS, NOT SKODA.

Jamie Whitfield 19 April 2001 10:54 AM

Hmmm, yes, well, what I meant was that the Scooby was a cult car, so was the Audi Quatro, the Mini, the Cossie etc, and they were all affordable. I didn't mean the dream cars such as Porsche 911 Turbos, F360, Maclaren f1 etc etc, cos next to noone can afford them.

Oh and Kick, I said Cult cars not C***s' cars!

Robertio 19 April 2001 10:57 AM

The only one that springs to mind is the Clio 172.

letdown 19 April 2001 10:59 AM

Id have to agree with you Jamie. The Subaru has had its day and due to prices etc..etc..! has fallen foul to the Nova posse!! But what has always amused me on this BBS is some of the people who bleat on about the 'Nova' boys have tinted windows, drainpipe exhaust......etc...etc! so what makes them not 'boy racers' .....possibly the fact that most of them are middle aged!! he! he! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
As for what will take over Im not sure but Im chuffed I got my money out of my MY98 about 8mths ago! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

GP 19 April 2001 11:03 AM

I think Hondas 'Type R' badge is becoming very desirable - if the new Civic is anything to go by, it will do well..

Focus Cossie mebbe ? - trouble is it has a reputation preceding it - whereas the Scoob came effectively from nowhere.. or out of a field, should I say http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

JoeyDeacon 19 April 2001 11:08 AM

I don't think the Clio 172 is that desirable as when I see one it just looks like any other Clio to me!!

I think the current desirable cars are convertables such as the Audi TT Roadster, Honda S2000 and Porsche Boxster.

It's funny how a certain type of car is in fashion for a while and then everybody moves onto something else.

PeterJ 19 April 2001 11:14 AM

*** Oh and Kick, I said Cult cars not C***s' cars! ***

What a top reply!

I think the Rover 75 thingy. Their mission statement is basically to make it the hardest thing in it's class (or something along those lines). Sounds interesting.

Jamie Whitfield 19 April 2001 11:18 AM

Yeah the 172 is quite good, close your eyes and it sounds and feels like a 205 GTI, a well fettled one admitidly!

But have you seen the state of the new clio 172, it was in Auto Express yesterday and it really does look like any other clio, Im glad I never bought one although I know they are very good.

It is funny that cars can be fashion statements, but I suppose we all knew it was coming.

matt d 19 April 2001 11:26 AM

Shouldn't its anonymity be a plus? Isn't it better to surprise someone with what looks like a normal hatch, rather than have everyone know your car is quick?

I think the past cult performance cars all had the thing of starting from humble origins, but showing performance that was surprisingly good compared to what people expected. People are now used to hot hatches and rally-rep small saloons, so the new cult car has to be something different - either a super fast MCC Smart type car, or a big saloon that outdoes the M5.

The Rover/MG badge is a joke right now, so it would be great if they could produce a set of loopy performance cars. A 4.6 V8 sounds just right, and it will have awful residuals so you should pick one up quite cheap 1 year after launch!

andrew6321 19 April 2001 11:29 AM

I thought Skoda bashing was 'old hat' these days - a bit like scoobs http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Anyway, b*ll*cks to fashion - I like the look of that Octavia. Time will tell.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Jamie Whitfield 19 April 2001 01:19 PM

Well I hope u r right, cos I love them, and I think I'd like an Evo 7 and maybe the ball will start rolling again!

robski 19 April 2001 01:25 PM

I agree they cult hasnt gone away. Loads of people I know still lust for a scoob or Evo, its just that they do not themselves justify the costs of ownership.

The Nova boys have always wanted them, its only now that they early cars are becoming affordable to them.

Im sure the Focus cossie will appeal to some, it appeals to me in a way, and Im sure I will test drve one, but for me one of the biggest attractions of the scoob (or an Evo) is that its a very safe car. Its got superb traction, excellent handling etc etc
Im very happy to know that my wife can drive it at 10% of its potential, and is virtually 100% not going to have a problem that the car isnt going to help with.

I honestly cant say that about most of the other cars mentioned. Clio 172 is pants compared to what it promised to be. And for me this is the main point, the "normal" manufacturers talk the talk about producing new better performance cars, but dont deliver. They can deliver, they just wimp out. Look at Ford, so what if they needed to spend loads of money making the Escort cosworth meet regulations (the excuse for dropping it), lets face it, it was never going to be a profitable line.
These sort of cars are about brand image, thats why they rally them. The whole point about having a hot version is that it gets the attention of the performance nuts (aka us), and then Joe Bloggs who wants a 1.3GL buys the same car.

How many times do you hear comments like "my 206 is better than your Subaru!" I do, why because they think that a £500,000 rally car is the same as their 206Gti. Just take them out and drive round a few roundabouts and a quick country lane, then for some reason the comments disappear!

I reckon Hyundai should market a homologated version of its WRC car ... don't forget that Subaru had about the same reputation (quirky, reliable, utilitarian) in the UK before Mr McCrae and the Legacy came along.

Or if Peugeot did a road version of the 206 WRC ....

Steve vRS 19 April 2001 02:45 PM

Part of the reason I chose to buy a MY01 was that the previous shape would soon get a reputation and fall into the "wrong hands". I know this is a snobbish attitude but if they can put big wings and scoops on a metro/nova - what the f*ck will they do to a Scoob?

Steve

PS I too was wondering when/if a Hyundi or skoda 280bhp AWD monster would come on the market!

ScoobyDoo555 19 April 2001 07:31 PM

<Or if Peugeot did a road version of the 206 WRC ....>

They did - it's called the 206 Gran Tourismo. Not too sure what the exact figures are, but my mate's a Peugeot Salesman - he took me out in it. Not bad. Still bought the Scoob though http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Dan

Steve vRS 19 April 2001 07:37 PM

Figures for 206GT exactly same as GTi. GT added bigger front spoiler and probably a balloon on a stick.

No matter how many Nova boyz there are that own scoobs, it still won't take the smile off my face, when I plant my foot down in first. No matter what, nothing will remove that G-Force induced Impreza Grin !!!
