What car for 20/21 year old?

20 years old with license held for a year and live in D rating post code. No idea what car to get, want something reliable that i can get insured for around £1,500. Any recommendations?

What sort of thing are you after?

what's the budget for the car itself?

do you want 2 door 4 door, turbo or na?

Budget is 1-2k. Would prefer a 4 door but 2 door would be fine, not bothered about turbo or not as its gonna be my first car.

Well i want a scooby but obviously it won't be my first car cos most companies said i need previous experience in this car or similar to get insured so i want a car which i can gain experience so then i could later get a scooby.

You could go down the non-turbo route but even then you may not get insurance. Looks like you will have to settle for a cheap car for now until you build up some no claims.

Bit of a curve ball but how about a BMW E36 328i? Can pick one of those up for £1-2k, have a nice long gear range and got a nice bit of power. 4 doors, nice NA engine, and I wouldn't imagine the insurance being too high on it.

I would have thought the opposite, can't see a 328i being cheap to insure for a new driver.

I was thinking more a Fiesta or a Corsa :lol1:

LSherratt 30 September 2012 08:18 PM

Well yes you could go for the basics: 206, saxo, clio, corsa, fiesta, 306 etc..... but he is 21, not 17 :lol1:

I would guess the OP wants something with a bit of speed though, as he is after a subaru later down the line. I think if you can get insured on 328i for £1500, then that would be a cracking choice IMO.

IWatkins 30 September 2012 11:28 PM

328i ? I doubt insurance would be available never mind affordable.

Mistu Colt? Good quality, reliable, good value.

my mates 21. he started driving at about 6 months ago. his first car is a corsa 1.8 SRI. cost him about 1800 i think. his insurance is about £1400. and thats this a good postcode in scotland! cant see him getting insured on a 328 for less than 2k really. would cost him £3500 to get insured on my scooby.

no chance you can insure a scooby for 1500. maybe in 2 years time with 2 years ncb atleast.

im 24 (last week) and have 2 years ncb. (was a named driver for a couple years before. been driving since 18) i have a a 03 blob eye sti PPP and i pay £1100 in a good postcode.

My daughter aged 19 has a 1.2 Corsa - she pays approx 850 for TPFT insurance.

LSherratt 01 October 2012 01:52 PM

Well I pay £980 on an Astra VXR and I'm 22. Although I live in a good postcode area.

how many years no claims though?

i had an audi S4 v8 and was £1400 when i was 22/23 with a Croydon postcode but it would be abit more than that if i had no ncb and driving experience ect

h4mza 01 October 2012 05:09 PM

Think im gonna have to stick with low powered car for a couple of years and build my no claims bonus. Sucks to live n Bradford :(

loz_dormer1988 01 October 2012 11:19 PM

Peugeot 306 Gti6 or a Rally, will easily get one of those for under £2000, and the insurance isn't to bad on them either. Cheap fun car!

BAD BOY V 02 October 2012 08:32 PM

mate have a look at a mk3 golf gti or even mk4 tdi, nice easy cars to drive and to insure, build up your ncb, for about 2 years then look to upgrade to the scooby, when i was 21 i had a 3.0 twin turbo 3000GT (uk spec) or GTO(import), 270bhp standard i paid 3g at the time but there going either cheaper now and insurance wasn't cheap first year as i had no ncb i paid 2g, inthe 2nd year i pad 1500, and then it dropped to about 1100, on fully comp, but get it on third party fire and theft give sky insurance and bell for a quote and see how much they quote you!

regards

VJ
