My WRX import engined VW Splitscreen -new boy on the block

Hi I wondered if you Subaru experts can help me with my build.

I currently have got hold of a Impreza 94 Jap import engine and wondered what size injectors it will have as standard.
The turbo is a TD05 - H.

I have a TD05-20g ready to fit but I think it might be an overkill in a 50year old bus !

I will be putting this engine in my 63 Splitscreen VW - I'll post some photos of my current 2.5 Legacy install, running Emerald ECU, Sweet as a nut.

Thanks chaps.

The 20g will most certainly kill the engine mate, the td05 16g is about as big as you want to go on that engine (with a re map).

Zebravanman 22 September 2012 06:45 PM

Do you know what size injectors the Jap import engine run ?

P.S it's not the engine in the photos.

jap import wrx = 380cc(grey) / import wrx sti 440cc(yellow) :thumb:

You should see 350\350ish with a 16g...how much does the bus weigh?

Cool as fook btw :D

For 350bhp you will need the yellow 440cc injectors as the grey ones will max out way before that:thumb:

Zebravanman 22 September 2012 07:32 PM

Ok cheers. Its not really about power for me more like an engineering challenge
No idea what the bus weighs- 1.6T something like that. Its an empty box
The current engine was mapped at 160 bhp. Not bad from an NA engine with emerald ecu.

So basically what your telling me is i should see at least another 100 bhp.
Blimey that should wake the old girl up a bit.

JonMc 22 September 2012 07:51 PM

Tob job, I had been thinking about a similar conversion myself:norty:

You will find the 20g quite laggy. What's your plan for charge/intercooling?

Zebravanman 22 September 2012 08:38 PM

I'm going to measure the volume of the std intercooler and go a little bigger. I will fit on the LHS of the bus and a scoop to duct the air.

I'm going to use a N75 valve boost controller from the VAG boys - custom exhaust, 2 bar map sensor, Walbro 255, Cotton Green, remap one and a bit bar boost and may go for the yellows....blah blah blah i'm sure you boys have heard it all before.....looking for something like 250BHP or maybe more lets see what happens. The turbo had to be TOTALLY moved, i've gone for a std stainless tubular manifold then a custom up pipe to the turbo and then v band via custom silencer.

I'm happy to post photos as I go if you are interested.

Pics and updates are encouraged:thumb:

Zebravanman 22 September 2012 08:49 PM

A few more pics, it's all in the development stage at the mo, the stainless pipe is much larger than required, it just gives the exhaust fabricators a guide of how much room i've got etc...... I know it looks a bit sh£ite at the mo ......I'm still developing guys. The engines off to the fabricators next week for then to fabricate the up pipe.

If i were you i would look to a smaller diameter up pipe to aid spooling, ps this will be an epic thread, keep us posted.

Oh and get rid of those headers mate, oe headers will perform better (ported) than the tubies you have on.

jayallen 22 September 2012 09:01 PM

Where abouts in Dorset you from fella? Try out www.dsoc.co.nr (Dorset Subaru Owners Club)

Is the splitty using a subaru gearbox?

Sorry, just to clarify - the up pipe is a MUCH larger diameter than I need. I welded this pipe onto the turbo flange so that the fabricators had a guide as I only have a limited space between my chassis and the cylinder head.

The up pipe will be smaller, the welded pipe is 62mm diameter so if they use smaller then it will be clear.

EO equipment is not possible on this build due to the shaping of the exhaust otherwise In would have used it - especially for cost.

Sorry about the confusion

Sherborne.

I'll be watching this with intrest. I'm toying with the idea of putting a 2.0 N/A in my bus. How did you get around the water cooling issue?

Zebravanman 22 September 2012 09:13 PM

Go for it mate - mines a 2.5 L no issues with cooling as long as you design the install properly. If you can't keep it cool - then you don't have a driveable bus.

Mines in between the chassis rails with custom scoop to duct the air. I've measured everything from temp at the engine, temp at the rad and temp going back to the engine.
I've also measured the wind speed under the bus for my install.

The rad is a 50mm core Cossie one.

You can get the standard injectors modified to flow far more, 860cc iirc by a few people; Lateral Performance did my old ones a few years back)... :)

You really will need the wheelie bar then :lol1::thumb:

Why would he want 860cc injectors ? , it would cost £200 to get them flowed by mark when on the other hand a set of £40 440's will max out his turbo/ engine and gearbox :thumb:

trails 23 September 2012 05:09 PM

I'm not saying he wants them...merely suggesting options to a self confessed newbie...440s will be at the upper limit of their capacity with a 16g anyways :)

My 440's in my last classic were at 85% @ 352bhp / 340lbft (tdo5 16g) which is totally fine :thumb:

trails 23 September 2012 05:21 PM

85% being within 15% of their maximum duty cycle so at the upper limit of their capability...as I said trying to help a self confessed newbie :)

Zebravanman 23 September 2012 06:08 PM

OK cheers, I will contact Lateral perf and discuss or just buy some Yellows as you have all recommended.

Great project. I always hear of the VW buses and bugs getting the ej20 conversion but have never seen a build thread.

Keep up the great work champ.

Yes will do. There will be a short few months delay until i get the exhaust fabricated and then take the ej25 out and then put in the turbo lump.

Danny Boy 03 October 2012 02:43 PM

As said above the tdo5-16G that you have already will make way more than your target 250bhp so i would stick with that and flog the 20g to get some money back. The money from that will easily pay for a set of 440cc injectors. Then that set up will make 340 - 350ish at the fly at 1.5bar assuming the custom exhaust flows ok.
I would be very careful with the boost though as i would suspect all that tourque is going to rip straight thru your gearbox and the reduction boxes on the wheels of the splitty. Unless you already have the Porsche gearbox conversion.

Zebravanman 03 October 2012 05:03 PM

No reduction hubs fitted any more they are long gone.
Gearbox has been uprated and fully rebuilt to take 250bhp +

Watch this space !
