Jolly Green Monster 12 April 2001 04:18 PM

Subaru's are down lots on previous years..

so have the cars / dealers got worse or has the rest of the cars got better?

pslewis 12 April 2001 04:22 PM

Or maybe its just that Subaru think they dont have to try now? witness:-

1. Clutch judder - what clutch judder say Subaru

2. Hesitation at 3000 RPM is now officially a feature of the car!! hmmmmm

3. Underseal coming off sir?? nah not a warranty item - wait for the annual body service and YOU pay to rectify it then!!

Pete

Nissan, Ford AND Vauxhall treated me better!

Here's an introduction to the survey:

This year's Top Gear / JD Power survey looks at S- and T-plate cars registered between August 1998 and August 1999 and, as ever, it is an exercise in measuring customer satisfaction - in other words, how well a car and its manufacturer have lived up to owners' expectations.

But unlike surveys from previous years, which asked viewers and readers of Top Gear to take part, this year the DVLA sent questionnaires directly to a random sample of owners.

The survey process began last December when the DVLA mailed out around 100,000 questionnaires. They went to owners of every model of car of which at least 1,000 examples were sold during the survey period - lower sales volume cars were left out because they probably wouldn't generate the returns needed. In total, surveys were sent to owners of 182 different models and enough replies received to include them all in what is the biggest survey yet by a long way; last year's having 'just' 115 models in it.

Neil Smalley 12 April 2001 05:30 PM

If you look at the spread of scores the winner this year only scored 89 points. Last year The legacy and impreza scored 98 and 97 respectively. There are only 7 points covering first and 43rd place.

What you are seeing here is, I believe a few things.
1. Effects of rising insurance for the impreza.
2. Effects of rising fuel costs.
3. Increase in the popularity of the model.
4. Some dealers getting complacent.
5. Effects of various warranty items(short engine block, clutches etc).

It's 1 and 2 that really killed the scores this year. None of which are the really car's fault but as a consequence of owning a high performance fuel guzzling car.

AWD 12 April 2001 05:36 PM

The way that the survey was carried out may have influenced the results as well.

Before people who voted were people who:
a) watched Top Gear
b) could be bothered to vote

i.e. a larger proportion of enthusiasts and people with praise or axes to grind

This year's survey was sent to people at random and so the results are the average Joe's thoughts.

Just my 2 cents worth....

JohnD 12 April 2001 06:11 PM

I have to admit I did critisize my car and the buying experience on the questionaire. I like the thing, but: -
Worst buying experience in 38yrs of car ownership, broken delivery promises, factory fitted options I did not order etc.
Rear diff. replaced after only 1800mls.
Sagging roof lining and "crinkly" sun roof blind lining - 3 attempts to cure!
Crap paint (DBM)
Poor syncromesh ( tried different oil-no improvement)
Poor fuel consumption - even considering its performance - my sons 300BHP Cosworth 4x4 is better!
All it needs is a few more people with similar experiences to knock it down the list! I love the thing but 43rd, although a shame, comes as no surprise. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

I wonder how Top Gear will play the changes to the top 10. We'll find out tonight.

Thats it, i'm off to put a deposit on a Lexota or maybe a Rover 75 with optional Daily Express Pack - includes:
flat cap, slippers, pipe, CSMA membership and Gloria Hunniford video (or maybe its was a bad dream.

paul corrigan 12 April 2001 07:37 PM

only 43rd with the crap i have had off 4 nw dealers 43rd is an over rated result !!!

mat-e-boy 12 April 2001 08:06 PM

43. Subaru Impreza
Seems about right. Wondered what all the fuss was about with customer satisfaction after having two new vee dubs. Don't get me wrong the car is great but my dealer behaves as if they are stupid, stuck-up and dishonest. With the help of this forum I was totally aware of their behaviour... " no problems with my00 clutches sir!" to quote only one example.
I hope they improve but I think the cars and Subaru will fall further again next year.

interesting to see you have to get down to well below car 70 before you even begin to see what you might call uk volume cars mondeo's, focus', astra etc. the overview will be interesing.
i recieved a survey this year....,my dealers been fine ...bit snooty this will do them good. But i can't fault the car apart from fuel consumption. Then top gear keeps driving them sideways round race tracks no wonder insurance has gone up as the cro-agnon men,get thier hands on the older models.
panic not.
why is it the top 10 are all grey suit cars apart from the yaris (somones got a sense of humour putting that there)
something strange about this survey.i wonder what the score difference is between no1 and 43rd?

AWD 12 April 2001 09:38 PM

Whooaahh - an episode of Top Gear I actualoly enjoyed. That's been a while in coming....

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

DJB 12 April 2001 10:04 PM

As was pointed out above, I think this is the first year in which Top Gear did not initiate the data collection. In previous years, if you didn't watch Top Gear you wouldn't have the opportunity to reply. Now that the DVLA is apparently conducting the survey sending out forms randomly, the results are likely to be different with less influence from enthusiasts.

In the USA, where JD Power originates, luxury cars always win (such as Lexus etc). Perhaps this years survey is falling into line with the US experience.

I was not involved in this survey although I do own a MY98. Despite the fact that I am delighted with my current car, it has not been as faultless as my previous MY95. And since then, the dealers have become a little bit complacent, I think. Hopefully this result will give them a shake.

You can but hope....

Bas 12 April 2001 10:17 PM

To be honest I don't give a damn about the Impreza coming 43rd.

All I care about is that my Scoob's a hoot to drive...it's costing me a bomb to run but I wouldn't change it for the world...after all why buy a car like this and then complain about poor fuel consumption and expensive insurance.

OK if you've got serious reliability problems you've got a reason to complain but if not just enjoy the Scooby experience.

Bas

boomer 12 April 2001 10:23 PM

TV licence payers note...

Just how much did that 180-plus row of car pictures, hinges, locking-plates etc cost? The presenter didn't even mention several of the cars. A studio full of people, most of which who didn't take part. Pathetic pre-scripted interviews with manufacturers pr-folks.

The BBC at it's extravagent(ly wasteful) best http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

But sadly still better than any other Top Gear that I've seen in ages...

HunterB 13 April 2001 02:11 AM

simes,

The Merc V Class is made in Spain and it really deserves its 181st place. I wonder how bad the Vauxhall Sintra is to merit being placed lower http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif

RichardC 13 April 2001 11:09 AM

I think I will sell my Scoob and buy something else. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Let me think????????

Looks like a Toyota Yaris is better than a Scoob. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

On second thoughts i'll keep the Scoob.

simes 13 April 2001 12:48 PM

Well I've been moaning for years that JD Power survey is skewed by the fact that the only people bothered to reply are either ecstatic or severely pi55ed off with their cars...

I guess it's still voluntary tho so still skewed to some extent.

So given the problems we all know about 43rd seems about right, and let's face it, is not that bad out of 182.

But never thought I'd see a Merc in 181st place http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif!

Cheers

Simon

I find it amusing how the Vauxhall Frontera is consistently near the very bottom of the list.
