WMS Rally car
We don't see that many rally cars on here and as the Impreza really became such an iconic car because of its rallying success, I thought I would share my car with you.
Ive been rallying since 1988, road rallys in a Sunbeam then into the woods in the early 90's. My best results from the early days were a 6th overall on a road event and also 6th overall on the Cambrian in 1991. I then rallied a number of Pugs, 205, 309 the back to a 205. I won my class on a number of events in them. I then moved onto the big bangers with a 4x4 Sapphire cozzy, it was bloody quick but kept blowing to bits!! We set loads of top 5 stage times in it but flogged it after too much time on the end of a tow rope. I eventually seen the light and as I was importing various Jap cars at the time an Impreza was the obvious next toy, I built a GC8 rally car from a mint ra road car and developed it over a few years, best result was 4th overall at the Winter stages at sweetlamb in midwales. It took a bit of time to get it all working well but once sorted we were usually in the top 10 and had load of class awards. Some pics http://www.cvmc.org.uk/GALLERIES/ric...ll_gallery.htm http://www.cvmc.org.uk/GALLERIES/and...s_gallery.html I sold the GC8 last year and soon found a newly built bugeye, most of the prep work was done but really needed some better brakes, engine, and gearbox. New car spec is - Bug wrx shell fitted with t45 wrc spec cage Fully aeroquipped brake and fuel lines front mount intercooler Gems ecu Prodrive wrc exetc suspension Rose jointed lateral arms Roof vent sump gaurd bag (fuel)tank Bosch 044 fuel pump Race battery Sparco seats Plumbed in fire extinguisher Things ive changed are Carbon door cards Hydraulic handbrake Hi spec front discs and calipers DS3000 pads all around 6 speed gearbox, fitted with a Kapps 5 speed dog kit and DCCD diff DCCD Pro diff controller My own engine- ej20 open deck block Steel crank WMS rods ACL race bearings Wossner pistons Cometic gaskets arp headstds UK avcs heads, ported to WRC dimensions Piper grp A/WRC profile cams Twin scroll headers, rotated up-pipe to single scroll turbo flange VF34 with TEG sport 34mm restrictor Rotated downpipe http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0595.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0594.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0594.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0583.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0569.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0580.jpg The car is due to get its first run in the woods on a charity day on the 23rd http://www.cvmc.org.uk/charityrides.html It's not a competative event but a good place to give it a test. I'm busy getting it ready at the moment (unless i'm building you an engine), all being well we can get it on the dyno next week. Results to follow.............................Andy |
Sounds like a nice build mate, Got to admire someone who drives them properly like they were meant to be driven, It's not all about straight lines :D
Good luck with it mate, Gaz. |
Looks great

Nice to see where my headstuds went!
Looks ace. |
Good luck on the 23rd, looks awesome!.

The engines all plumbed and ready to fire up, just waiting for my Diff to arrive, as ive switched to a 6 speed I need to change from the 4.4:1 to a 3.9:1 (JDM r180) along with the shorter prop.
A couple more pics http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0584.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0585.jpg |

A guy called Nick Stamper now owns it, He's Terry Stamper (ex Prodive, mapper) He's been doing various North West single venue rallys in it this year.
ah ok, but it would have been a few years ago.. |
Ive used it mostly around North/Mid wales events, sweetlamb, cambrian, etc.

any more photos of the back? have you got a rear firewall.

Managed to get a bit more work done over the weekend, she's now got the new diff in, prop on and got her fired up today. She didn't want to start at first so I pulled the 8 plugs out and a set of 6's went in, started started away then :-) I have to say it sounds much 'crisper' with the new cams in.
I need to get the diff controller wired up and a new pair of front discs and we won't be far away then. OH, a visit to the dyno as well............. http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0597.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0598.jpg http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSCN0599.jpg |

Are you having a ride Rich? or just watching? Spoke to Graham today and well be fitting the Simtek pro and mapping on monday.
Will try pop down monday :thumb: Comming up for a watch, see if funds allow a ride :norty: Rich |
A good (ish) day on the dyno, and I now have a new Simtek pro fitted and mapped :thumb:
Huge thanks as always to Graham (Enginemapper @ Group B motorsport), Graham fitted the ecu Monday but with a few small snags and interuptions He had to finish it off today. Oh, and I forgot to fit road tyres and the forest rubber tends to get a bit hot and splatter al over the dyno room!! Sorry:cuckoo: I originally had a Gems ecu and the original setup was a vf37 (twinscroll), the first time it was mapped we got 286bhp and 380ftlbs, Graham felt the turbo was the issue and a re-think was needed. The new set-up is a rotated vf34 still using twin scroll headers and custom up-pipe. I also fitted WRC spec cams. Today we got 323bhp and 435 ftlbs, remember this is fitted with a 34mm restrictor which is intended to keep bhp below 300!! So I'm very happy with the numbers and it is pretty good for a rally engine. However we are still only peaking at 1.3 bar of boost:wonder: There are 2 aspects we are unsure of 1- the turbo is rebuilt but not new 2- the header set-up is twin scroll going to single, could this be an issue? All in all i'm very happy, achieving these numbers at 1.3 bar, it is really promising and shows the engine set-up is good. I will post the graph asap but it pulls really well from 3700-6000, the cams help it breath much better. I now need to refine a few things and source a new turbo. The car is now night and day since switching from the Gems to the Simtek, it starts so much better and throttle responce is superb :luxhello: Thanks again to Graham for his mapping skills and techical input. Just need to sort my brakes out for Sunday:D |
435lb/ft?! Wow, well done!
|
why would you take off a twin scroll to go backwards to a vf34 (albeit they are very good at their job)??
t/scroll will give more punch on a restrictor alyn |

As promised the dyno graph. You can see the car makes 300bhp by 4k and holds on well to over 6K. This should be great for a rally car as I will be able to hold onto gears longer on the tight twisty stuff :-) There is obviously more to come as most good rally cars running vf34's make 1.6-1.7 bar of boost. the next challenge will be to push toward 340bhp and break 450 ftlbs.

Well I have finally had chance to drive it :-) Ive had a quick run around to bed the brakes in, I have to say she does go really well, the new dog box is sweet as a nut and changes as fast as you can move. If you time the gearchange just right to drop back onto the peak tourque it goes up the box very quick indeed. Can't wait to get into the woods tommorow.

Any chance of you getting a vid of it for us to hear it popping and banging it round the woods?.
|
What makes the torque so high?

Well it was a great day and we raised loads of dosh for the Wales air ambulance, I don't know the numbers yet but there was a constant stream of passengers all day. The car really does go well and on one part of the 2 miles stage I saw 6250rpm in 5th gear, we were in the air at the time. The screams from the lady sitting next to me was rather funny :-) Theres a few things to iron out before we use it in anger, the brake pedal was very long and it was getting a bit hot as only one fan was working. Nothing major and overall it worked very well.

The 34mm restricor has a negative effect on bhp but positive effect on tourque when the engine is confgured to work with it. Essentially the idea is to get everything working between 2500-6000rpm. It's high compression with high lift/low duration cams, small port heads to maximise spool and some mapping tricks that bring it all together:thumb:

yes rally regs currently allow a max of 34mm for WRC or clubman type cars.....

I went to a post charity day meeting last night, the club managed to run 210 passenger rides and raised well over £5000, most of this will be going to the Wales air ambulance, with a portion going to the startlite charity.
A massive thanks on behalf of Clwyd Vale Motor Club to everyone who donated their cars and time to entertain the passengers, not forgetting the organisers, marshalls and everyone who helped behind the scenes. All being well I'll now be entering the Cambrian rally on the 20th of October, the car needs some work to get it where I want............Updates to follow :-) |
As planned this weekend will see the first run in anger for the car, ive entered the Cambrian rally (www.cambrianrally.co.uk) It's the final round of the BTRDA championship and has an entry of 140 cars. We are seeded at car 24, the event is 165 miles in total with 6 gravel stages with the last (7th) stage on tarmac around the great Orme in Llandudno. Ive had to do loads of work on the car, mostly small jobs but they all take time. I finally got the brakes working as they should, the guy that built the car had the brake light switch screwed too far down and it stopped the peddle coming all the way up!
The car's been back on the dyno as I found a missmatch with the headers to up-pipe, I also changed the exhaust housing on the turbo, the results were the same as before but Graham set the antilag up with the throttle jacked open, sounds great but a bitch to drive on the road. Ive just had my decals dropped off so i'll get them on tomorrow before heading off for scrutineering in the afternoon. I'll try and get a pic up asap If anyone fancies a great day of motorsport on Saturday get yourselves up to the North Wales forests and give us a wave :-) |
