Which rear spoiler would you get? or think is best?

My original spoiler was stolen http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif and there was some damage to the boot lid.

Rather than mucking about myself, I asked Dave Reid to supply the spoiler unassembled and unpainted, then handed the whole job over to my bodyshop to repair the boot and paint & fit the spoiler.

The body shop did fit a couple of extra bolts across the bootlid, though you can use adhesive (or even nothing I suppose, as the "uprights" actually lock the bootlid plane into position.)

You may find that you have to drill a couple of extra holes for the uprights if, as in my case, they don't marry up perfectly with the original holes.

Although not absolutely perfect (and that may be my bodyshops fault anyway), the overall result is pretty good. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Are these differences cosmetic only or can differences in drag, downforce, fuel economy etc be noticed??

actually the 22B spoiler is the biggest of the lot http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif, but surely there is no best, it is whichever you like the most???

I have just happily purchased the 22B / WRC wing from DR Motorsport. In actual fact the STi wing is bigger and it sits 1 foot http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif from the bonnet whereas the WRC is 10" and the standard one is 6".

Although the STi v wing is massive it doesn't look out of place with a set of big wheels.

The 22B replica spoiler is an adjusted size as the 22B car is wider, and would look odd on a normal spec car.

It IS 2" smaller (height) than the STi5 one but bigger than the standard MY00 spoiler.
Suits the car better in my opinion, especially with 16" wheels.

Did you fit it yourself? It's due to turn up tomorrow so I will have a go this weekend, just wondering how long and if its tricky. Did you go for extra bolts along the lid??

I am sorry, I was talking about the real 22B wing, which is bigger than the sti 5 wing.

Also, it fits in the same mounting holes as any other car and extends 2.5 inches either side of the edge of the boot lid, just like the wings I had on my old car which was a regular impreza.

As with regards to wings & downforce....
They all will generate some degree of downforce - but only at high speeds (&gt;80mph!) and there use for day to day speeds is *purely* cosmetic. the only figures I have seen for 'downforce' were from german mag Sport Auto who recorded 11KG LIFT not downforce for the MY00 spoiler at 200 km/h...though they thought this was pretty good with other cars registering 30KG lift at the rear at same speed.

I would imagine that the bigger spoilers just increase drag at high speed though I am happy to say that the sti 5 spoiler helps keep the rear window clear and doesn't obstruct vision as you look through the middle - I think the lower (and P1) variants tend to get in the way when reversing so sti 5 or 22b are better in this respect. I have also heard that london cycle couriers prefer the bigger spoilers for impromptu towing antics/ resting at the traffic lights without unclipping feet from pedals :-)

Another advantage of the big spoiler is when you have another car following you 'in convoy' - big spoiler = easy to spot in heavy traffic.

probably unlikely to be any real downforce generated though :-(

1) Rozzers dont like them
2) Thieves like them
3) Vandals like them
4) Insurance companies dont like them
5) More abuse from the nova rude boys
6) All equals increased worry

Ive been looking all over for a picture of a DBM and big spoiler, thanks. Ive now gone and convinced myself this is what I need next http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif just a quick ? though, did you have to drill any other holes in the boot or can u just use the existing holes?

There are extra holes available predrilled and captive nutted in the spoiler, but they involve drilling new holes in the bootlid whis is a prob if you want to take it off to sell it etc.

The standard MY99/00 wing has two bolts either side plus a plastic boss that clips into a hole in the bootlid.

I used the two bolts either side only plus used double sided fixing tape all round (if you do this leave a small gap under the brake light so trapped water can escape). Also used clear silicon mastic round all the bolt holes and wiring hole.

It hasn't fallen off yet.......

My DRMotorsport WRC wing turned up this morning! Probably fit it today or at the weekend so pics on the way soon! Very exciting...

By the way, this took about 5 days to arrive from order, and its painted, which I think is bloody good. Thanks David!

Managed to get a second hand
Prodrive WRC spoiler like Andy Tangs and its the Muts.
Wanted one for ages, could'nt justify the price tag.Well at least its worth something when I sell the car right?
Its in primer just a coat of DBM will do the job.

Has any of you lot had the side bumper strips painted? afriad the paint might come off if some idiot bangs into them.

Got a second hand STI5 spoiler for sale for £195 no offers! in DBM , needs respraying hence the price.
I'm in Cardiff so come and collect it.

The best spoiler is obviously the low level one on Earlier cars.

Anybody want to buy one?
