do I need to put liquid gasket on rocker cover?
Just about to start my drivers side rocker cover gasket? I have some the grey stuff but just thought is it really needed? Do they do it at factory? As I'm sure if it is uneven it will surely leak more than just oem rubber gasket to metal cover. I'm no expert but your advice would be grateful asap. Justin.

Don't know for definite, but if I were doing my own I would, and would use hylomar, not sure what grey stuff is, not exhaust paste is it mate, wouldn't use it of it is.
You can't beat s smear of hylomar!:thumb: |
No its not exhaust paste. Its the proper grey silicone for Japanese engines apparently. Don't ask me why. I just thought that any foreign body between gasket and metal would create a wavy seal. I think I will use it just thought if ithey don't use in original set up then why now.

Always use hylomar myself, Rolls Royce use it as a head gasket with a silk thread, well they used to anyway, and if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me:thumb:
If the grey stuff is for jap stuff then you can't go wrong really:thumb: |
Use a liquid gasket that goes off and set's. It's recommeneded by Subaru and they use a orange silicone sealer and it aint cheap .

the grey stuff aint cheap either i think its called 3bond, it dries properly and is hard enough to not come off inside the engine

oh well, its all done now, the old gasket didnt look bad at all,it was only leaking right at the back bottom corner.it hadnt had any liquid gasket on it before so i hope its all good now. the bottom bolts were'nt very tight either so maybe whoever changed before couldnt be bothered to tighten properly.they are a pain to get to.the worst bit is trying to hold the socket on the head of the bolt to turn it without it jumping off. wish i didnt have hands the size of shovels.ha ha.
thats 2 jobs ive done now since owning her for 2 weeks. also did the 02 sensor.hhmmm what next me thinks.:thumb: |
if you are using genuine subaru gaskets don't use any sealer we don't and we have not had any problems over the past few years

Agree with Scott, only use the 3bond on the half moons at the rear of the heads, not on the gaskets.
Are you replacing the spark plug seals? And thebolt hole seals? Both worth thinking about if you're not. |
