high revs when idle
hi guys ive got a 2005 wrx, when i first start her up the revs are very high around the 2000 mark when idle, after she warms up they drop to between 500 n 1000.
ive been told by my local mechanic it could be the coolant temperature sensor is faulty, anyone agree with this or could it be something else??? also she is very jumpy in low revs when accelerating!! not sure if this is linked or not?? thanks sam |
Don't think it'll be coolant sensor because revs drop, how long as it been like this?, try cleaning the icv with brake cleaner.

ive had the car 2 months now, been like it ever since i got her, im sorry mate this my first scooby!! wats the icv? lol

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago mine was a combination of the Air fuel ratio sensor and the Idle valve......wasnt a cheap fix :cry: But all sorted now!

ok mate thanx. nah no light has come on and ive checked the ecu and no error codes, how much it cost you to fix?? if you dont mind me asking?

Icv idle control valve. On a classic its to the right of the throttle body
Eml engine management light lol. The icv can be sticky , common problem on classics |

well this is interesting, as me and my old man both have scoobys, mine being 05 his being 10 both ours idle at 2k until warm, its unusual for them to do it and be a fault with something

If its the idle air valve control sensor it will put the engine lift on and the code is p1507 I think. This can be an easy fix all is required is for you to clear the sensor once removed. All Subaru cars when started cold will rev high and settle down once warm that's normal. Not sure at what revs though.
You will be better to take it to a independant specialist. They will be much cheaper than the main dealers. Also worth whole to use the search function in here as it will provide useful info. |
2k is a bit high tbh, should be more like 1200 to 1500

Yeah actually mine ticks over at 1500 when cold so yeah 2 does sound high, As supa said go to a specialist garage rather than main dealer

Sounds like the same symtoms I had. New ages are prone to idle control valve problems especially if not used regularly.
The last copy -I think it was the last one- of Total Impreza had a step by step pictorial on how to repair them. Did mine without any problems and now it's perfect. (I didn't attach a drill just used my fingers) Good luck...... |
Could still be coolant temp sensor. It acts like a choke to inject more fuel when cold. When it warms up its like putting the choke back in. If its playing up at low temps then it could cause the ECU to supply more fuel than usual. Would explain why it sorts itself out when it warms up.
Also try cleaning the ICV too as its not hard to do and as has been said it is quite A common fault. |
