Diesel engine oil change
 

Hi, I've been told by someone not entirely trustworthy that, after changing the oil in a Subaru diesel engine, there is some sort of ECU reset that needs to be done, something to do with oil dilution. Can anyone throw any light on this please? My car is a 2009 Legacy.

Yeah thats correct , its a oil counter reset , not sure what will happen if its not reset .

B*gger! The handbook doesn't mention it in the oil change section so I was hoping it was untrue. So, next question, does it mean I have to take the car to a dealer for what is, essentially, just an oil change service, or does anyone know how to do it?

OK, tried that and nothing happened. I guess those instructions must be for a later ECU than mine (mine's an August 09 i.e. just before the new model came out).

The owners manual gives instructions on how to change the oil and filter but makes no mention of an ECU reset (the author of the reset instructions says they are in the handbook for a MY11). Does that mean it's not necessary on my car? Anyone?

No reset required for the Euro4. :thumb:

my 08 OB now has 93k, and never had a reset done.

I'm looking at changing to a thicker oil next time as a semi syth 5w30 seems too thin now on a worn engine. It burns a bit more and doesn't sound as slick.

Someone mentioned 10w40 instead. Any thoughts?

I sent this query to my old dealer "I therefore want to do the oil changes myself. I am now in a Euro4 (Aug 09) Legacy diesel and I'm unsure whether or not an oil counter reset is necessary. Opinion on the internet is that it isn't for UK Euro4 engines, but there are some people saying it is. Can you clarify please?" His reply: "Yes you should reset oil counter when an oil change is done using a Subaru select monitor 3"

So, I'll have to use the bl**dy dealer, just for an oil change service. So annoying. :wall:

Dpf light comes on flashing if not reset

It's the oil dilution ratio counter reset

It is in the Later owners handbook euro 5 but to be honest it's a pain in the ass without the ssm3

Hello, I know it's an old post. But I wanted to ask what oil do you recommend for the EE20 engine from a 09 Impreza?

as long as its a 5w30 C3 spec something like mobil or total Quartz will be fine

Fully syntetic right? What about the antifreeze fluid? (For the intercooler)What do you recommend?

Yes, an ACEA C3 0w-30 or 5w-30 is fine and it will be synthetic. Any of these 0w-30 or 5w-30s are fine, you can't use any old oil, it needs to meet the C3 specification.
