Themexican 08 August 2012 09:27 PM

so you've got a 6 speed gearbox, forged or sti engine, etc?

400bhp = about 10k if you're starting from scratch, especially on a 19 year old car

KAS35RSTI 08 August 2012 09:29 PM

I wouldnt do 400 on a 93 WRX engine

You dont need 10k either!

scoobyTaff 08 August 2012 09:37 PM

400bhp

engine forge rebuilt 30k ago,got fmic.550s standard box if not 400bhp how close can i get?

Brun 08 August 2012 09:40 PM

Standard box will be on borrowed time (in most cases) if you start pushing towards 400!

KAS35RSTI 08 August 2012 09:40 PM

With 550s & FPR maybe 400

KAS35RSTI 08 August 2012 09:43 PM

Just break the box & upgrade to a V5/6 STi box. Its the torque that kills the box

Brun 08 August 2012 09:46 PM

Would those boxes be that much better?

scoobyTaff 08 August 2012 09:53 PM

400bhp

best turbo option on budget?

marcevs72 08 August 2012 10:25 PM

£4500 for enginetuner 2.1 stroker + £1000 for simtek + £1200 for sc42 turbo plus injectors, front mount, headers and up pipe,so another £1200 ish plus fitting and setting up...then there is the box which needs to be changed to 6 speed set up so another £2000.
i know as just doing this to my 93 wrx.a lot of money but will make stupidly quick car.

gibbyisking 08 August 2012 10:39 PM

i just went for a p1 gearbox with r180 diff however with yours being the wrx u will have to change the hubs n shafts

zakscooby1 08 August 2012 10:41 PM

as above you will be on borrowed time
i would personally upgrade box, brakes suspension etc and make it a reliable 400 classic

bigsinky 08 August 2012 11:10 PM

400 genuine horsepower in a 19 year old classic on a budget. this makes me laugh everytime. £10K is about right. reliable and budget are not mutally exclusive

L.J.F 08 August 2012 11:17 PM

sell your car and buy a already built car.........

Another money saving tip:D

Yellow R 08 August 2012 11:27 PM

As stated above ur gearbox probably wont handle 400bhp for long, but then again it can be maintained, its down to ur driving style, No launches etc might help in making it last a little longer.

Always budget extra as in alot of cases a budget always goes out the window, Its not just about big bhp numbers, build it to last and a reliable car is what you want.

Best of luck with what ever you do with it :)

what sort of power can the V5/V6 box take? would a V4 diff work with that box or do i need the diff from V5/V6?

Sorry to highjack your thread OP

legacy_gtb 09 August 2012 07:46 AM

Brakes? suspension?

..... or is this going to be another "pub numbers" big engine in a standard chassis?

Shaks-STI 09 August 2012 07:52 AM

Its not cheap to get 400 out of a classic, i am saying that because im on that route and not reached it yet but not far off :norty:

marcevs72 09 August 2012 08:06 AM

you need to budget 10k to do it properly so its reliable and not going bang

ive already got inj, front mount, headers,up pipe, power fc,forged engine its just standard box & standard tdo5 ive still got!:wonder:

Shaks-STI 09 August 2012 10:50 AM

If you already have all of that then you not far off mate, gearbox and turbo. I have a TD05 20g and this turbo has made 400+ on a 2.0L Good luck

marcevs72 09 August 2012 11:36 AM

look at 6 speed complete set up which go for about 2k and look at the sc42 turbo.after talking to alan jefferies decided on that one for a good reliable 400+bhp and less lag.turbo about £1200

I have put over 400ft lbs with good abuse & know of a few others still going strong.

I used Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil with a magnetic plug.

You can use the same diff on the STi. If you got a Type R I would look for a DCCD box (rare). Non DCCD box would also work but you wont have the DCCD.

Rear diff, i cant even remeber as it has been a long time. If you get a V5/6 DCCD box then the R180 will work fine, however if it comes from a normal STi that uses the R160? then I think it may need changing, however take that with a pinch of salt as I am not 100%

banny sti 09 August 2012 11:59 AM

sti's are all 4.444 diff ratio be it r160 or r180

As I said, 10k = 400+ bhp

Its been asked a million times on here, people always number chasing. Problem is, half the time people have no idea what 400bhp feels like.

My mate has 440/440 in his classic, running a 2.1, Simtek, Scooby Clinic Turbo, 6 speed, Blitz Nur spec R, FMIC, etc etc. Its a brutally quick car but owes him around 15k from changing bits/upgrades etc.

What most people fail to overlook is brakes and suspension when going over 300bhp, you can easily add 2k to the budget to make it stop and go round corners or alternatively just leave it and decorate the car with a hedge.

Fairly sure my old classic had £15k+ spent on it by previous owner to end up at 447hp. It's not just the power, mostly everything needs an upgrade as you go.

^ completely 100% agree!

A standard engine in a well tuned chassis makes a quick car!

A tuned engine in a standard chassis makes for something which at some point (if being used properly and not just being bragged about to your mates) will run out of grip and brakes!

440/410 cost me £18k, and probably about half of that was the engine and drivetrain.
