Keown in England squad

England's key men
Martin Keown has been included in the England squad for the World Cup finals - but there is no place for Blackburn striker Matt Jansen.

Captain David Beckham was also named in the squad after recovering from a broken bone in his foot.

England squad:

Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), James (West Ham), Ferdinand (Leeds), Campbell (Arsenal), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Mills (Leeds), Brown (Man Utd), Keown (Arsenal), Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Dyer (Newcastle), Butt (Man Utd), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Joe Cole (West Ham), Owen (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Vassell (Aston Villa), Fowler (Leeds), Sheringham (Tottenham). On standby: Murphy (Liverpool)

Meanwhile, striker Andy Cole has quit international football after being left out of the England squad.

Full story to follow.

So whats your 1st choice team from that lot then? (assume everyone is fit)

Seaman (he's past his prime but he's the best we have)

Mills
Ferdinand
Campbell
Bridge (better defensive-wise than Cole)

Beckham
Gerrard
Scholes
Dyer

Owen
Sheringham (the only forward here with world class vision)

There you go1 Feel free to pick my team to shreds!:D
Heskey wouldn't make my squad, let alone the bench. :)

Justin

wtf? "quit" lmfao

jonny gav 09 May 2002 02:50 PM

IMHO-in his form at the moment Shearer WILL be missed.

he has scored more premiership goals than any other englishman.

and why oh why has steve mac been left out??????????????(must be because he plays for a poor team)

Am a little surprised that cole didnt even get a glance from sven, his record speaks for itself and as a rovers fan he turned our season round, his ratio of goals/assist against appearances speaks for itself. (look what happened when he was banned, we struggled to win anything!)

Was more surprised Teddy made it, he's looked very tired and jaded in the second half of the season, i know you need experience but he's been found wanting at spurs imo (tho at least the youngsters around him can do the running in the england squad).

Am surprised lampard didnt make it, and matt jansen, jansen is one of the most exciting english forwards in the game at the mo imo, he can run with the ball (not just after it like owen) and has masses of flair and potential, tho i suppose the world cup isnt a place to 'blood' a new player, that and the fact he needs a hernia op badly which mr ericsson asked rovers to delay.
Still at least it means he'll be fresh for the start of next season looking on the bright side rather than missing it for extra holiday and op recovery :)

I hope to be picked so i can take corners.

hahaha

stephen30 09 May 2002 04:40 PM

1 Question? Why no Kevin Phillips?

Steve

dsmith 09 May 2002 04:55 PM

answer: 'cos we cant play niall quin and his zimmer frame to feed him all his goals. (retires into bomb shelter and apllies flame retardant suit :D)

actually IMHO theres several who'd be in my squad before heskey. Hes consistently failed to do anything in an England Shirt.

Deano

danielson 09 May 2002 05:41 PM

Kevin Phillips?
What has he done this year then.

stephen30 09 May 2002 05:52 PM

He's done a lot more than that Mr Sheringham. He doesn't need Niall to feed him goals. Last time out in an England shirt, KP did more tha anyone else on the pitch, except maybe Beckham.

Chris L 09 May 2002 07:25 PM

Well it's fairly obvious that he is building the team around a strong defence - in the stlye of the best teams in the world. I hope they manage to play with a much flair though..

Good to see the younger players coming through, I think the average age of the squad is 24 - pretty good. Very pleased for Joe Cole - so often England has ignored the 'flair' players in preference to 'safe' players. If you are going to win something at this level, you need people who can create something a little bit special - Beckham and Cole are well suited.

I am surprised that Jansen didn't get the nod. I watched him for a season when he was at Palace and the guy had quality written all over him. He has improved since being at Blackburn, so I do think it is a shame. I would have thought Steve Mac would have been there. He has managed to maintain his place in the first team of one of the best club sides in the world, when most people predicted he would be sold he is a class player.

Glad to see an England manager has finally seen sense and not picked either of the Neville brothers (I know one was injured) - personally, I've never rated either of them - too many mistakes.

My only real concern is Mills - he is hot headed and short tempered not the attributes you really want at this level, he could be a real weakness.

SGE has proved that he can pick the right team and he has built a strong squad. We'll just have to wait and see how they perform..

Chris

ptholt 09 May 2002 07:36 PM

i think chrisl summed it up well, though the lack of flair players with only beckham and cole who could be accused of having any 'flair' would have liked to have seen any one from sinclair, jansen, macmanaman but alas not.

Chris L 09 May 2002 10:41 PM

Thanks Pete - I'll be applying for Motty's job in the morning :)
