Offered a bargain Breitling. Is it real?

A friend of a friend is selling this for £500. Not sure if the picture is good enough to tell if it's real though?

Get a reputable jeweller to check it before parting with the cash.

That watch is very cheap at £500 so i would give it a miss,, if the owner knew it was real it would be on ebay now going for 3 times that,.

Boro 26 July 2012 09:17 PM

The guy reckons he has had it certified as genuine. Found it in the foot well of a car he bought.

I'm not convinced yet but I'd hate to pass on it without doing a few checks.

I might ring the rolex accredited watch repairer he says checked over it

Can't tell enough from the pictures I'm afraid. Get some decent pics and post it up on www.breitlingsource.com

Boro 26 July 2012 09:36 PM

I've asked for more pics

..well if the back has been off then that another hundred quid plus to (officially) replace the seals!

If you want an expensive watch then pay for it - or take a trip to Argos ;)

i bought a fake in Turkey and took it to get a new battery. The jeweler said it was a brilliant copy and it was similar to his 3k one he had. Only knew it was fake as the metal strap tarnished , but the clasp and watch were perfect.

Got another 2 years even better , but the winder pin fell out ! its list so as its self winding i have to wait till its the right time off day to shake it and wind it on. (dont wear it enough to keep it wound)

on closer inspection , you will notice the logo on the clasp is backwards , and the back isnt on straight. But other than that (and the bit that fell off) its a good one. Winds itself , and weights loads (probably full off lead) lol.

Guys on breitling source reckon its real because no fakes were made at the time the watch came out :-/

Still, not sure £500 is a bargain after reading a few threads on there.

goatblower 26 July 2012 11:32 PM

It could well be a gen but its only a cheap quartz one so probably only worth around £500,my advice would be not to buy a quartz,go for a decent fully automatic ;)

Boro 26 July 2012 11:52 PM

Mecaquartz. Whatever that is?!

Boro 26 July 2012 11:53 PM

I like the look of the Breitling Aerospace. They seem to go for around £1000-£1500

jods 27 July 2012 06:05 AM

How about suggesting that the finder contacts the previous owner of the car and says "I found a watch - have you lost one?"

drb5 27 July 2012 07:00 AM

Ok, I'll put it this way Boro, mine is the same model with only minor differences.

Instead of Roman numerals, I have numbers. The date is in a different position and the face is blue on mine. The OH paid £1k over 2 years ago for it and I know for a fact, it hasn't dropped a penny in value....not that I'd EVER sell it. Guys on Breitlingsource said the same thing to me. They are one of the first of their chronometers, so highly unlikely the fake makers bothered with older models, but I'd still want it checked out. I went to several jewellers, once buying mine looking for a genuine steel strap and not one of them said it was fake...that included a proper breitling service shop. One guy did comment that he couldn't believe how good condition it was, for being so old. :D

If I were you, I'd go for it. There's too good a chance it's real.

Boro 27 July 2012 07:03 PM

I'm going to see it tonight. I'll suggest he contacts the previous keeper but somehow I think he'll decline lol

Midlife...... 27 July 2012 07:40 PM

If he sells it without legal title that's an offence, as is buying it.......

I must be getting old, but this was my initial thought last night.

ScoobySteve69 27 July 2012 08:20 PM

Try finding the Macro setting on your camera :lol1:

peter a 27 July 2012 09:56 PM

It's a fake, open back watches don't show of a battery , they are automatic.

Mods please close thread.

bigredrob 27 July 2012 10:13 PM

Think its a Fake,it should be automatic, no battery

Bubba po 27 July 2012 10:19 PM

This whole transaction stinks to high heaven.

Boro 28 July 2012 09:36 AM

Well, I went to look at it last night and it's way too small for my wrist. The guy wrote to the previous keeper but didn't get a reply. The car was stolen/recovered so only had the logbook to track him down.

As for all the fake experts. Not one person on Breitling Source agrees with you, so I'm guessing your not 'that' expert lol.

Either I'll be leaving it where it is, nice watch though, just too small.

Open back watch? Lmao

The back was taken off to replace the battery and show the Breitling stamps on the movement.

Mods please ban this idiot :cuckoo:
