2002 Bug Eye front sub frame corrosion

Has anyone got a good second hand front sub frame thats the u shaped one ?

BlueBugEye 25 July 2012 08:16 PM

Just bin it!

vicks 25 July 2012 08:29 PM

i have just removed mine as it had a couple of rusted holes in it.
i am going t repair it, cut out rust holes and patch new steel in,rust primer it and then paint it black, it wont be done for a couple of weeks at the earlist and will be up for sale once done.
i am a qualified welder so job will be 100% when done.
subaru dont have and in the uk and if you want a new one then its £445 + vat and they have to be imported from japan.

Thanks for that let me know when its done if you would

Do you reckon its ok without then ?

vicks 26 July 2012 08:20 PM

personally i dont notice the difference with it removed..some people on here who do track days also say no difference without it.
take your off and see what you think.

As it is part of the crash protection. Not sure how insurance companies would view it. On one MOT one of the securing bolts had decided to fall out and was a faliure. So it not being there could cause a problem.

vicks 27 July 2012 06:21 AM

i agree yes it is part of the crash protection ,being made out of 1.2mm tin i cant see it doing a great deal to be fair, but every little helps..
i thik most joe bloggs MOT tester wont relise/know it has been removed.
from experience and both my mates being MOT testers ifthe car has a part on then it needs to be servicable and sound if its not there (within reason) then they cant fail it..
i had fog lights on my passatt but they werent wired up so it should have failed but he told me if you just take them off then i cant fail it.
each to there own

Thanks for that,i will try it,are they easy enough to remove or will i probably find the bolts corrode in as well.

vicks 29 July 2012 05:08 PM

the bolts in mine came out with no probs really
i have cut out the rusted sections on my subframe and welded in new 2mm steel, rust primed it and painted it black and is now ready for a new home.
i have taken some pics of the process to show the rusted section, rusted section cut out and new section welded in.
if you get yours removed and you dont like it without it then mine is here ready to fit if you want it.
good luck

Just had my bug eye wagon mot'd and although a good subframe and wax oiled it is totally covered by the undershield so noted on the cert as an observation. how can they ever tell unless they drop the shield?

vicks 29 July 2012 08:49 PM

observation for what?

cobra_mark 30 July 2012 07:46 PM

There were a number of observations on the MOT cert, for example the child seat fitted and not tested, but also a note to say the undershield was fitted. By that I assume they are covering themselves for what they cannot see under the plastic undershield which would have included the subframe.

Sorry for piggy backing but...

My '01 Bugeye wagon has failed its MOT on a rusty front sub frame, the U-shape box sectioned one and I need to get hold of a decent one quickly.

(Yes, I know you don't need one and I should just take it off, blah, blah, blah..... )

Does anybody have one of these in good condition?

I'm happy to collect.

Much appreciated.

Sam

I learned this at cost when mine was having the lower front arms replaced under warranty.
