News Groups

Who, what, why & where please.

Don't know anything about them other than I will have to pay a subscription if I want a good one which I am more than willing to do after giving up Sky TV. I have read a few websites relating to them but I'm a bit warey of who to trust which is why I am asking SN's opinion.

Any advice would be great.

astraweb, sinky will vouch for these too

ive used them years

http://www.astraweb.com/

stevebt 21 July 2012 09:23 PM

Newsgroups are the best, I use Newzbin and I pay a subscription to astraweb. You can get by with using your own ISP's newsweb address but I tried that and almost everything I downloaded was incomplete.

I never care if I miss a tv program now as I can gaurantee its out there somewhere for me to download and watch :D Freeview and Newzbin you can't go wrong :D

peter zippy reid 21 July 2012 09:26 PM

Astraweb for me aswell

Ant 21 July 2012 09:28 PM

i prefer astra over newzbin as they're quick to move live sports stuff, ufc and boxing go rapidly but they last a lot longer astra

bigsinky 21 July 2012 09:29 PM

astraweb or supernews. Newsbin client or I use SABnzbd+

20 connections should see your connection maxed out. use SSL port 443. you will be traffic shaped if you start to leech loads from any news server.

You might want to try http://www.nzbs.org/ to see what available. you will need more hard disk space. 14TB and counting here :D

but you're a porn connoisseur :D

most ISPs will thottle your connection if you download too much from a news service. they know which ports binary newsgroups download on. 119 and 443. they check how much is being downloaded to a certain port. if you go over a certain amount at certain times during the day and evening they may throttle your connection to half it's speed for a certain time. e.g. Virginmedia 10am-3pm is 20GB. 4pm-9pm is 10GB. go over these quotas and you will be throttled to 50% of your speed. Moral is just schedule all your newsgroup downloads after 9pm.

Isn't astaweb just the server and you need the likes of Newzbin to get the stuff you want ;)

bigsinky 21 July 2012 09:46 PM

you may also want to check out http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php

stevebt 21 July 2012 09:48 PM

I use them as well but they ain't as good as Newzbin. I take it you use nzbmatrix as it only costs $5 to be a vip member :D or it did when I paid :D

i find that SABnzbd+ very easy to use. 1 click download, it finds all the binary parts, auto repairs missing rar and par files, schedules downloads, catagorizes your downloads and lots more. oh and it's web based as well.

stevebt 21 July 2012 09:50 PM

I still have 150days left on Newzbin as i buy in the xmas sale ;)

yep same here. i am lazy so i just use nzbs.org. 1 click download. use nzbmatrix for stuff that nzbrus might not have. failing that demonoid.me and get the torrent.

stevebt 21 July 2012 09:53 PM

bigsinky, whats this SABnzbd+ as I have never looked for it before, I have used the binsearch before but it seems full of virus'upd software and passworded crap.

stevebt 21 July 2012 09:55 PM

I have been a member of demonoid for about 10 years but I don't use it as I keep well away from torrents. I still see stuff I want on Demonoid but all this leaving my pc on for others to get pisses me off especially when no one is getting anything.

Ant 21 July 2012 09:57 PM

sbanzb is just the client.

i use sabnzd or unison on the mac

and i purchased newsbin pro for windoze

bigsinky 21 July 2012 09:59 PM

it is a really easy to use client. web based so no software to install. if you look at nzbs.org and pick a movie say, you will see a one click button to send to your client. no looking for parts. just set the client up. i.e news server, path to where you want the stuff saved, other bits n bobs. even schedule stuff to download after midnight, its there in the morning.

upload ratio is the key here. the better your ratio the better you seem to connect. they can't reaaly see whats on your machine btw. your torrent client keep a track of all that. and it will be only the stuff you are seed ing anyway. just leave your torrent download open for a couple of hours after it was finsished downloading. after a couple of hours you will find no leechers anymore (I do anyway)

it is available for winblows as well. just written in python. but a great wee piece of software.

bigsinky 21 July 2012 10:06 PM

anyway Jamz3k we have hijacked your thread. back on topic. get a sub going to astranews. get a download client. get it setup and welcome to the web's dirtiest little secret.

stevebt 21 July 2012 10:08 PM

I just looked on Demoniod and I think my ratio is 2.7 but I haven't downloaded anything from there in years.

Ant 21 July 2012 10:08 PM

i used newsbin pro first and had to use sabnzb for a mac alternative as newsbin pro is not supported on osx.
