Breakdown Recovery - Yes or No - How much?
 

Firstly, I apologise if this needs to be moved somewhere more appropriate but I didn't know if it was insurance or general related.

My classic Wagon is 13 years old now and although it's been a reliable (and remapped) Scoobaru apart from consumables, getting breakdown cover is playing on my mind. I'm insured through Gary @ KM currently but was looking at a decent level of cover should the Impreza breakdown.

I did a quick search/comparison via MoneySupermarket for a quote on UK cover including the following...

I got a few quotes back with the cheapest being £48.90 (but £40 excess via rescuemycar.com) through to £100+. The cheapest without excess was £68.95 via GEM Motor Assist.


It's a bit of a minefield as apart from being through an old Lloyds back account or standard policy through eCar years ago, I've never really had cover.

What do you guys pay? Is it through your insurance? Worth it? Which company (if stand alone, i.e. AA, RAC, above mentioned)...

I'm just trying to get some information to assist me and look for the companies to avoid; I know the cheapest quote may not be the best.

I went with Startrescue when I had my Scoob £122 for Full personal European cover, 2 cars, 2 drivers , both covered in any vehicle they are travelling in. Used them once and they provided a low loader within 20 mins. Cant complain at that

I have my breakdown cover with Asda, they also do my insurance.
£50 full national cover with all the bells and whistles, can't go wrong in my opinion :thumb:

I'm with the AA. Personal cover for any car, roadside and onward journey for £7 a month. I dont bother with home start as I have more than one car.

Britannia Rescue, two cars, both 13 years old or more, £120, full European cover.

It seems it's not all about the AA or RAC any more then? I was surprised at prices as low as £50 for a years cover. Definitely seems competitive if I get what cover I need. AA came in at £140 :eek:

I was paying £6 a month with RAC for recovery package (take you and up to 7 passengers to any destination or back home). Used it once as well on my previous car and couldn't fault them. Renewal price went up though so I canceled.

I currently pay 14 quid a month with the as and have done for years, I should look into it but last time I changed I went to green flag and because my home was a lot closer than my garage they said they would take it there only, I went metal and so they offered to cancel policy and pay the rejoin fee with AA and so stayed with them and never been sure to change even though I have called them out 2 times in the last 6 years

£50 a year , policy is with green flag,national recovery and homestart.

Lol, i pay £240 every bell and whistle on the list, any car me or the wife are in and ALL european regions.

About 20yrs ago i broke down on the M1 with no cover £350 and 3 buses and 12 hours later i got home, took a week to get the car back, and that was from woodhall svc's about 30miles from home, never again.

Mine sounds expensive until you put a 4x4 on it's roof in a ditch in croatia, or your type r bottom end starts knocking like a good un 1200 miles from home.

Have a look at GEM Motoring Assist, been with them a few years, way cheaper than AA/RAC and come out top in I think it's Auto Express surveys. Touch wood I haven't had to use them yet so no direct experience.

Got my Green Flag with my bank account.

Reminds me that mine is up for renewal soon. Got full cover including Europe last year for £50 IIRC but it can be done cheaper. Foolishly I'd stayed with the AA for years just paying whatever they sent me for a renewal, they tried so hard to keep me when I rang to say I wouldn't be renewing last year :D

Mine was through ADAC which is a German recovery company as i generally go to the ring once a year.

I've used it once back in April when my scooby broke down on the way back from Castle Combe.

Not bad and cost me £80 for the year. Need to renew it for this years trip

RAC does no claim discount if you don't call on their services. We only pay 50% of the 'full' rate.
