How much meat on a new brake Pad?

I seem to of acquired a muffled grinding sound when I apply my brakes, mainly on the front. But there still looks to be a good 5-6mm on the pad, and no scoring on the disc and barely a 1mm lip round the edge..

Does anyone know how much compound there is on a new set of pads?

Usually 10-12 mm on new pads depending on car.

ah cheers dude, it isnt an STI, meaning my pads could be close to the end of their life?

It could be grit stuck between pads.
Take the pads out and clean the faces up with some sandpaper .

I dont think grit would stand a chance against heavy breaking at 90mph
