New age rear shoe kit and ABS light on........

Hey all

Was driving my mrs in to work the other night and now my abs light has come on?? Not driving hard or anything but there is a tight roundabout i like to just have a tinker through, so done it as normall and then the light came on, also i have a weird like tick/click/squeek noise now as well coming from what sounds rear left wheel.

I have recently put a full new set of breaks all round on her disks and pads, and also replaced the handbrake cables and brake fluid at the same time, i was wanting to replace the rear shoe kit as well but could not source one??

So question being does anybody know where i can get a rear shoe kit from to complete the set up?? the actual rear shoes look good and have plenty of life in them but the actual kit i think is causing me problems as the handbrake wont release all the time if car is pointing down hill when applying handbrake at lights or what have you, i can apply and let it straight back off and car will sit in the same position and will not role, and i have to reverse a tad to disengage the handbrake, however when car is facing up hill and i release the handbrake it immediately rolls free indicating to me that the kit its self needs replacing as they are tired and warn and is not returning hence having to reverse to release, it will pull off and free's up after a few seconds but it really annoys me and I cant live with it anymore! Car is going up to be put in scanner to find out which sensor has gone down but i also want to do the shoes so can anybody please point me where to try! I have rang my local dealer and they dont have any in stock and wern sure when they would, i have tried aztec performance but did not have any off the shelf, so any suggestions are welcome and also oppinions on what may be my problem should you think it mat be related to something else.

Thanks all
Craig

I have had a couple of scoobs in that have chunks missing out of abs rings ....

Maybe worth checking them ..

Cheers for the reply Rich

Are the rings detachable and are they part of the driveshaft or fixed to hubs? If they do come off easy enough i will just source some new parts at the same time to eliminate everything should they not cost that much! Like i say car is going up garage today or tomorrow so when i find which sensor is down i will check the ring at the same time :thumb:

the rear ABS ring is bolted to the back of the drive flange and requires the bearing/hub split to remove/replace

potentially you have damaged something when you have replaced the cables & brakes on the rear??

They were sticking on when i bought the car which really pushed me in to doing all the breaks straight off! Like i say i tried to do all the shoes at the same time but could not source them.

When removing the rear disks we wound off all the shoes on the back and the disks came off pretty easy with a gental tap with my hands, then cleaned all the rear shoes and kit out before finally blowing it through with the airline, new disks went back on but still has the sticking of the handbrake. It does not sound like there is something spinning about in the rear disk more like a catching noise on a full rotation and gets faster with increased spead, car is booked back in for friday so i can hopefully source a set of shoes and complete shoe kit to replace the originals with.

Just really grips my s**t having to reverse to release it especially when sat on lights and someone is right up your chuff trying to kiss ur back bumper! Which means i have to pull off as normal and let them work free which i hate having to do, eapecially when i have changed everything i could at the time for new, these bloody shoes kits are prooving to be a bit of a nightmare!

on another note does anybody know if a hawk wrx rear handbrake kit will fit my 03 sti?? found a car in the breakers with 15k on the clock so am tempted to go for these at the min as its proving a challenge to source a new complete rear shoe kit.

h/brake shoes are easily available???

as for the noise most likely the rear backing plate has distorted/corroded and is catching the new disc, you will likely see a polish mark when the disc is removed........

Hi Alyn

Its not the shoes thats the problem shoes are easy enough to come by, its the shoe kit within im having difficulties with, my hand brake does not release it just sticks on when dropped, so trying to sort a new kit, have rang dealer with me as well and they dont have them and various places i have rang have told me main dealer only, i am still awaiting a reply from one source tho hopefully will hear in the morning :thumb:

unless you have snapped a spring or the adjuster was over-tightened and seized i cant think of anything that would "hold" the h/brake on..........

the only way it can lock is if something has come adrift and is getting jammed between the shoes and the disc

Try some of the breakers on here as plenty seem to advertise the discs and calipers , i'm sure they could strip off any of the bits for the handbrake for you
