Astra 4wd subaru powered track/rally car
i started this project back in Jan and was originally going to be a RWD astra but changed my mind and now going for 4WD subaru powered, i have it posted on migweb.co.uk but after seeing James's 205 i thought i'd post mine on here too,
so a quick catch up to where i am, rear end is in place and most of the seam welding done.... http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car11.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car17.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car19.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car20.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car23.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car25.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car26.jpg then to tackle the front, i got this from someone i know who was going to build a track car but changed his plans, http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car27.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car31.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car34.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/car/car32.jpg thats where im at at the moment, a little more trimming and it will be ready for a test fit. it measures up quite well but think part of the scuttle tray will have to go.. |
Good to see a few different projects on the go on here now, good luck with it fella.
|
Keep up the good work mate:thumb: Should be a fun car when it's done:cool:
|
Looks good.
When your done you should make that Vectra (I'm assuming GSI) AWD too, that would shock a fair few. |

keep us updated on here
will be a great read hopefully |
Nice project....
|
A quick update, spent most of the day drilling spot welds, cutting and unpicking, ran out of time but it’s very close to fitting another day and I think it will be in place ready to mark up and clean ready for welding.

Love projects like this, make sure you keep at it and finish it. Sooo many projects like this never get finished as owners lose hope. Keep with it and update us.

I have to ask but why? Seems like a hella alot of work, if u want subaru power why not buy an old type R or something and do that up?

i suppose i have always been a vauxhall driver so initially it was either a nova of an astra before deciding what to do with it, also i'm not building a show car and if that was the aim then agree a 2 door type r would have been a better route my aim is not mega powerfull but i will be concentraiting on handling and braking first... i can increase power then to suit its not going to have any comfort features, and as prodriverules says where is the fun in that it also gets me out the house on weekends... oh and i forgot to mention it could be a mid life crisis :) |
lol all good points and it will definitely keep you busy :thumb:
|
Looking really good so far, I really hope you finish this as so many of these conversions never seem to come to fruition:wonder:
|
Good luck mate, you decided on the route for the engine?
|
No not really thinking to much about engine yet, my plan is to get the shell built then get it cleaned and painted/wayoyl'd underneath and some of inside (not worried about outside yet) then get the cage in and on its wheels by the end of the year,
then need to start saving for an engine I would like to go 2.5 but my issue will be down to funds and the more I spend on an engine the less will go to things like brakes, One of the reasons I started the thread here was to get some input from a Subaru community when it comes to engine/running gear so any advice is good... Also not looking for massive power as it will be built with tarmac rallying in mind |
top work fella i would love to be able to do something like that :notworthy
|
Well I have now got the floor and chassis in and tacked in place so a few weekends of welding to look forward to…
http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/Car/Car39.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/Car/Car43.jpg http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/Car/Car42.jpg The Subaru front panel will be chopped off once the rest is welded in and the original Astra bumper mount will be moded to fit, I may reuse the lower section of the front to remount the rad, I’m going to chop the Astra slam panel so it is detachable to allow easier engine install. http://www.ian-rachel.co.uk/Car/Car40.jpg |
I would talk with the MSA regarding using it as a rally car, the rules have changed alot and there are strict rules about these sort of conversions. There are alot of cars that have been banned from 2012 because of the new regs.
good luck with it:thumb: |
Love it.
i started a simular project a couple of years ago but had to bin it due to emigration. I hope you finish, and enjoy It. |

A quick update – repaired the scuttle tray on both sides, the turrets were about 10mm further inbound so had to plate the top of the turret to the Astra body not the easiest place to get in with grinder and welder, Then started the inner arch, although trying to form the curve with the returns proved a challenge but doesn’t look too bad, gave the bare metal a coat of red oxide and some sealant as the front of the car is close to the front of the shed…
