Replacing caliper bolts with stainless?
My Brembo calipers are held in place with long M12 socket-headed bolts.
I've had them off twice before, and having received my new discs from Ian at Godspeed, will be putting them back again soon........if it EVER stops raining long enough:( But should I replace the bolts with stainless? I'm well aware of the fact that the tensile strength of stainless is less than high tensile steel, but at M12, would they be strong enough? TIA. |
Its not the tensile strength but the shear strength. you would prob be about 1/2 the strength and as these bolts are also under fatigue i would suggest staying with the originals
also socket heads are about the best you can get even better than hex head. |

No chance they'd be strong enough. Stainless must NEVER be used in high stress situations end of.

I design and test aircraft parts and we would never use stainless bolts in a situation like this. if it fails it will go were the shank joins the thread leaving this stuck in the caliper carrier then u have to start trying to drill it out. stainless is a bitch to drill

I know about not using them in stress situations, but they aren't torqued up THAT tight, plus they arer quite large, so thought I might get away with it. |
