classic wrx v sti

i have a v2 wrx 1994.

wondering what does the sti have that the wrx car dosent, comparing it to a v2 sti of the same age.

power differences??

cheers.

You have either 240ps/260ps (as the WRX got more power at the end of 1994) ,STI has 275ps

Power, 240ps for the wrx v 250ps for the STI.
Uprated internals (forged dogbone pistons), a fair few sti goodies on there also, these were basically off the line wrx's that were taken off the line and converted by STI.

V2 STI is 1995/96.
An original STI is 94.

The version numbers are only used on STI's, WRX is known by year.

Original STI got 250ps compared to 240ps for same year WRX. The STI engine was blueprinted and had forged pistons. Bigger intercooler and turbo, better exhaust etc. Also got a closer ratio box and uprated suspension parts including a strut brace. It was visually different also with fancy wheels and large rear spoiler as well as a better interior.
Overall it was quite superior to a WRX.

Same turbo Matty, both ran the TD05 16G on the saloons (STI wagons also ran the TD05 16G where as the wrx wagon ran the TD04).

Tony:)

My bad, I thought the WRX saloon got the 04 along with the wagon...
I trust your knowledge though buddy.

+1 for definite, same turbos just stronger internals for the sti ,right from V1 - V6 except for the wagons which peaked at 250ps

so the only real difference is stronger internals, so this and the ecu is the cause for the higher power??

jayallen 30 June 2012 08:57 AM

To be fair the engine is no stronger than any other classic.

Try to get hold of a Z4 ecu from a 95/96 wrx they are rated for 260ps and it will be a straight swap with no issues, check out ebay or msg a specialist spares guy on here.

which overall,to be fair is pretty weak.

If you go for an early one like 94 then the engine will be cdb. I bought a spare cdb in January for £200, these are now around £400 plus so definately worth more than the later models.
