dislocated shock?

Hi all, had a bit of problem today in my hawkeye wrx and just want to know if any one else has had this?
i was having a spirited drive when i saw rail lines crossing the road ahead so i braked hard but i managed to hit a pothole just before the lines.
the rear nearside shock made a 'twang' noise like the spring had 'jumped' then it ratted all the way home like something was loose.
when i got home, i removed the rear seats and removed the cap from that shocker (3 nuts) and checked the centre nut was tight but as i twisted the ratchet, there was the same noise and the top plate jumped. it seemed as if it was out of position and i had just popped it back in. i refitted the cap and went for a drive....problem solved.
so.....has anyone ever experienced their shock 'dislocating'?
