Martyn smashes VF 48 into orbit !

Second visit in two weeks to Enginetuner to finish off a few small mods... :norty:

Firstly to fit Perrin turbo intake silicon, Perrin parallel fuel rails, new fuel lines with Pyroshield covers, Denso 750 injectors, Carl Davey manifold spacers, and some super skilfully applied DEI reflectagold tape for the underside and end tanks of the tmi. Also did the water delete mod on the throttle body. :nono:

Took most of the day to sort the above so a quick map was sorted to get me home... 372bhp / 420lb. Not bad but I did thinking it would make a little more.
:Whatever_

So today was round two: finish off the heat management mods with a lovely PTP turbo blanket sitting on some DEI looking heat wrap covering the downpipe to turbo flange and lipping round the turbo. Fit the Grimmspeed Electronic boost controller. Lastly a new air filter for the Forge / Litchfield Caik and we're ready again. :thumb:

Gotta say the technicians at Enginetuner are incredible - Paul was the man again

So Martyn fires up the laptop again. Twiddle diddle, click clack - spins the rollers and same again 370... Boring. :brickwall

Twiddle diddle (techy terms ) and Martyn's honking the horn !

390.8 bhp and 430lb. Thats my VF48 on V power - forged 2.5. :luxhello:

That's more like it and we're all well happy.

Onto the methanol mix... Started a few runs and began popping off the intercooler to turbo silicon elbow... painful.

Got over the 400 easy enuf. 401, then 402, hey it's 403 but some serious heat was killing the runs over 5k. Tried a few tricks to get over it but couldn't... Car needed a cool down to see more on the rollers - but I need to go home.

I guess if the graphs follow the V powers curves all the way round I reckon it'll get to nigh on 410 bhp - but for today the paperwork says 403 bhp. :notworthy

And here's where Martyn smashes the VF48 into orbit - an incredible 490+ lb of torque !

Another 60lbs of torque and another 13-18 bhp approx on 10 % methanol.

So... thanks to Alan and Martyn plus team at Enginetuner down in Plympton - outstanding work guys. ! Again.... :D

Cheers all

A

PS. Stick the graphs up please Martyn. And maybe define the heat issue we had please.

prodriverules 07 June 2012 09:51 PM

Very impressive from a vf48,well done Martyn:cool:

Got a vf48 in my 2.5 Sti block with 900cc injectors parallel fuel rails fuelab FPR running on vpower hope to see 340-360 hp and around 400 torques
Away at RCM on Tuesday fingers crossed

scatty 07 June 2012 09:55 PM

Stick on some wrapped RCM headers and matching wrapped Harvey up-pipe and you'll get another 50lb +.....

Great result there :thumb:

impressive.:norty:

Heres me thinking 450 ft/lbs on the vf48 was a nice figure, But thats pretty bloody good.

How much boost was needed to get that figure ? must be pretty high if its starting to heat up ??

wrx9181 07 June 2012 11:04 PM

Wow nice

Apostle 07 June 2012 11:35 PM

Hmmh. 1.46 ish dropping to 1.1. Iirc Rob

MarkC 08 June 2012 09:47 AM

Great results, nice torque for the road 450lbs/ft, very impressive

L.J.F 08 June 2012 09:57 AM

That is some decent amount of torque! I had a VF48 on my old bug sti and had a peak boost of 1.65:D

MartynJ 08 June 2012 11:22 AM

At John's request !

VPower only, John's ported heads showing their potential ;)

10% Meth map, huge jump in torque, finished run early as peak power had already been achieved.

JohnD 08 June 2012 11:43 AM

Sounds like a front mount IC is required?

JohnD

greg320 08 June 2012 12:24 PM

Top job, bet you're well happy with that

Yes or possibly a Chevron Motorsport topmount, but either way it's a fair chunk of money !

IainMilford 08 June 2012 01:10 PM

nice smooth curve :thumb:

stedee 08 June 2012 02:53 PM

bloody hell looks a torquey motor on that graph

prodriverules 08 June 2012 03:01 PM

280 ft lbs climb in 1K,that must pull well from down low alright

I might see you there - should be collecting my car later that afternoon. :thumb:

Will you be there from about 5pm at all?

786omar 08 June 2012 03:23 PM

Nice ;)

Adam-M 08 June 2012 04:56 PM

That must feel crazy fast. Does it hit you hard or is it smooth? Read the 2.5 is a bit smoother but with that torque its hard to beleive tbh.

Yellow R 08 June 2012 05:44 PM

Fair play some nice Torque figures there.

jaypSTi 09 June 2012 12:08 AM

Stunning John!
Poor little vf48 getting bullied by Martyn :notworthy

Apostle 09 June 2012 12:57 AM

Thanks for all the positive words fellas !

It is very smooth, and pretty quick with it....

TBH I'm very pleased with the results but now am thoughtful with the 2.5 block and 490lb...

Well, it's like the wealthy 93 year old guy who marries a 19 year old starlet.
He was asked if he was worried about the risks of having sex considering the age gap.
"Yes, it's a concern" he said, "But if she dies, she dies"

Outrageous Allan :)

Surely the answer is not to exceed maximum recommended boost and avoid pre-detonation !

jaypSTi 09 June 2012 08:24 AM

I prefer the look of the vpower graph John. Although the methanol map has great headline figures it looks very peaky. Bet the flat foot shifting comes in handy having to change gear so quick. I'd sacrifice the 10 odd bhp for that extended power band. Also less risk of getting sued by passengers for whiplash everytime you prod the accelerator and near instantly get 490ftlb ripping their faces off. Either way im sure it will keep you very happy until a bigger turbo comes.
All the best

Seriously? I like the idea of a big torque 2.5 but not if its smooth. I dont care how fast the car is round a track as long as it feels fast. I find it way more fun.

Can you compare what the 490lb ft 'feels' like? I may have the wrong perception but i thought with that torque it would feel anything but smooth, i was once in an E92 Dakar M3 and wasn't impressed, it was way too smooth and i thought this was partly due to it only having 290 odd lb ft. I know it makes its power way up the rev range.

Correct my thinking if its wrong please as i dont want to waste money on the wrong setup.

Yes, we deftly avoid.
