Wet sand and polish,

Been thinking about doing this for a while now and tonight i finally made a start, some of you who know the car are probably thinking WTF!:cuckoo: as to be fair the paint is very very good as is, but i just fancied doing it:D unfortunately i dont have a DA at home so all flating had to be done by hand using 2000 and 3000 wet and dry, then polished with 3m products, fastcut+, extra fine, and ultrafine, i started with the bootlid and then a quarter panel but it started to drizzle before i had chance to finish the 1/4 so it'll need another pass with the polisher:Whatever_ took some pics to show progress,

Before,(light orange peel and distorted edges on reflections)

After, (will be going over it again because of the rain but orange peel gone and much sharper reflections).

During,(wet sanded with 2000 and 3000 wet and dry)

once i'm happy i'll be using my new blackfire kit on it:)

JonMc 01 June 2012 10:22 PM

Only needs doing once, just to remove the texture of the lacquer, when finished will give an awesome depth to the paint and super sharp reflections:)

If you dont have access to a DA (i dont at home) i just used 2000 wet and dry and a double density sanding block for the flat areas and a 3m 3000 trisac disc for the rest, then the three grades of 3m compound coarse and fine with a rotary polisher and a compounding head and ultra fine with a rotary polisher and polishing head, then go over it with a micro fibre, next i'll be using Blackfire Gloss enhansing polish, then Blackfire all finish paint protection, topped off with some Blackfire midnight sun paste wax:)

Black-Hawk 02 June 2012 07:12 PM

Despite attending the Welsh motorsport festival at Pembrey circuit this morrning and watching the Wales v Babarians match i still managed to have another crack this evening:freak3: first went back over the 1/4,

1/4 done but only with compounds, Blackfire gep, afpp and midnight sun paste wax to come:)
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/q...8/IMGP1226.jpg

So, as its not started to rain yet its onto the door,
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/q...8/IMGP1244.jpg

door done (compounded) some reflections,
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/q...8/IMGP1247.jpg

And then it started raining again:(

Silver Scooby Sport 02 June 2012 09:27 PM

Jarvis your the man ! that is quite something... your lucky in the respect you understand paint better than most matey and that allows you to do things like this. Looking forward to seeing this soon in the flesh.

Black-Hawk 02 June 2012 10:41 PM

Cheers Si, it was either this or paint it orange:lol1:

Cannon Fodder 02 June 2012 10:55 PM

Jarvis, when I enquired a long time ago about wet sanding/polishing the S202 (OK the S202 was alleged to have thinner paint than a 'standard factory car) I was warned that the paint on an Impreza was too thin to allow it to be done.

So that is obviously not the case then? It was your new BFF who advised against it by the way. :D

Cannon Fodder 02 June 2012 10:57 PM

Nearly forgot to say that the car is looking good as well, but the rear spoiler needs to be refitted... ;)
