TDRacing Quote.. booked in... good price?

Went to Thwaites Development today to talk about my subaru WRX,

I work for JLR, I know a fair tinkle about performance, but I must say Mark knows his stuff, definite +1 for his subaru technical knowledge! spot on!

So he explained what id need to go stage 1 approx 280-290 bhp, and how I would go about the next step (towards 340bhp with a bigger turbo etc etc) and help me sort the best way to set myself up for it now to avoid costs in the future.

So its going in for:

Walbro 255lph fuel pump,
Performance panel filter,
H+S full turbo back SS full decatted exhaust 3",
The Remap including rolling road runs etc whatevers needed
The labour to fit it all etc,

Quote: £1400, so approx £1550 inc VAT.

What you reckon??

toneh 28 May 2012 09:03 PM

It seems a fair price , but consider around a third of that figure will be dyno time
It might be worth while fitting a turbo now if funds allow and get it mapped in one hit , might only save a little but it's a little more than nowt

Really? I've never paid more than £90 for dyno time.

Milkybadger 28 May 2012 11:40 PM

The price could go down, he said H+S prices go up and down daily sometimes so hes allowed up to £650 in the quote so it could easily be cheaper.

Well genuine fuel pump is £150 (most of the cheaper ones are fake copys) its like £300 - £350 for the map.... that already = like over a £1000 lol and he has like a 12month guarantee on parts

and my VAT calcs are a bit off... its more like £1600 inc VAT

funds dont allow a turbo now, but i could easily put one and some STi injectors in at a later date and just have a 'map tweak' which is like £90.

CANT FRICKEN WAIT!

Might get him to do my steering rack thats knocking... mainly cus i cba

+1 for the above, surrey rolling road is quite popular and they charge £75.00 for a rolling road session ,API charge £100 tops.

Walbro (£65)
Panel filter (40)
3' fully decat exhaust system £650(new) £300(used)

Fuel pump is 30 mins to fit for a novice
Panel filter is 20 mins for a novice
Exhaust hard to say ,depending on how any studs snap, either way stubborn bolts can take time to remove.
Then its mapping time so the price might not be that good/bad :thumb:

marcevs72 29 May 2012 07:55 AM

walbro for £150 ??????? buy yourself from any of the traders on here and save at least £50 and fit yourself as 15 minute job same with panel filter buy yourself and fit even the exhaust can be bought and fitted yourself just before remap and just drive off boost to the rolling road.will save you about £250 straight away.all 3 are really easy to fit with basic tools.

M@RKB 29 May 2012 09:33 AM

You are in safe hands with Mark, he's very honest and knowledgeable.
Mark has built my Hawk Wrx to 406bhp/406lbs, with more to come. Cost a bit more than £1600 though. LOL.

toneh 29 May 2012 09:33 AM

I should have said mapping and dyno time
And £90 quid dyno time with tuners I know would not go very far at all

madmerlin 29 May 2012 09:48 AM

+1 for mark his knowledge is second to none...

BUT i will say be VERY careful with what you want to do.. Been there bought the t shirt.
Quick Maths lesson:-
Price of your car, + £1680 for the work then add on your next chapter (turbo+ injectors +tmic and map tweek) = Sti.
And you would still have a WRX at the end of it all, and your insurance would be MORE as a moded wrx rather than a std sti.

I would advise thinking very carefully about your next move mate.
Oh and taking a wrx to 340+ make sure you have got a lot of spare cash for some new gearboxes, i went through 3 before i sold up and bought an sti with a nice strong 6 speed box:D

which ever way you go with this i hope it all works out for you chap:thumb:

Oh and finally.. fyi..... to calculate the vat simply multiply the ex vat prce by 1.2:thumb:

TonyBurns 29 May 2012 10:39 AM

£650 for a fully decat. H&S??!
Even if you count the dp and the backbox at 200 each, are they doing the up pipe too as the centre is only around 85 quid, my full twin scroll sports car 3 inch system was £980 inc vat and most of the cost there was the sports cat itself.
Maybe cheaper going direct to h&s tbh.

Milkybadger 29 May 2012 12:06 PM

up pipe too aswell,

I can do most things myself, like the steering rack im going to do over the BH weekend when I get the car back. I would have also maybe looked at grabbing bits myself but TDR are out of action for 2 and half weeks minimum supporting some team in scotland.

CANT WAIT THAT LONG! haha

Its the same with PCs, I can save £500 on a top dollar system easily and ive saved family and friends £100s of pounds because i do ALL the work myself lol,

Also i got the mint car for £1000-£1300 under what i should have really :P got more jam than a jammy dodger!

Im never happy about paying somebody to do something i can do myself for a bit cheaper... but im planning on keeping this car for a good few years, so making friends with your local scooby specialist and biting a little bit of a bullet could potentially prove priceless down the line, when i wang something and need it done quick, or i need an MoT quick because i forgot etc etc.

Either your tuners work very slow or their dyno is over-priced.
You shouldn't have to spend over £100 for dyno time alone.

To the OP, if you are able to replace the steering rack yourself then a fuel pump, exhaust and panel filter will be a piece of cake.
Just to give you an idea when i did the same it cost me:
K&N Panel filter - £40
walbro - £50
Japspeed decat downpipe - £60
rest of exhaust, Ninja 2 (2nd hand) - £150
mapping on road - £350
All parts fitted myself costing total of £650 for over 290bhp

Haha, been there buddy. Mark fitted me in that afternoon on a Saturday.

B0DSKI 30 May 2012 09:04 AM

£1680 Incl VAT ;)

Milkybadger 30 May 2012 10:46 AM

£1680 inc VAT which could go down, because we have an 'up to' fiugure on the exhaust setup.

I would do it myself and save a couple a hundred squiders... but then id have to wait 2 and a bit weeks for them to be back open again .. and then the backlog.. wait nearly a month or spend a hundred quid or 2 and being the right side of your specialist and not have to do it on your drive :) :P

averyp2 30 May 2012 11:33 AM

You won't go wrong with Mark at TDR buddy. He prices very fairly and will not push to sell you something you don't need. I have regulary taken parts to him to fit for me, but have also had him order bits in for me too, its totally up to you.

P.S the 'some team' he's supporting in Scotland would be the Pro-R Subaru, he built the engine and maps it for Time Attack ;-)

http://www.timeattack.co.uk/2011/pag...=6&s=257&p=147

Milkybadger 30 May 2012 11:55 AM

THATS THE BADGER!........... couldnt remember the name of the team

Yeh so their working solely on that car all of next week then supporting it in scotland

haha i said badger.:freak3:

Tidgy 30 May 2012 12:05 PM

its about going rate for that sort of package so nothing dramatic.

some folks prefer second hand, or to source parts themselves, tends to work out cheaper, but then also very easy to buff or the wrong fitment parts.

you pays your money you takes your choice

Milkybadger 30 May 2012 12:20 PM

The engine is very under tired also, so im counting on mark to get the most from it, but i think the turbo would be the limiting factor right now,

Its deffo going in, i drop it off after work today......... and on Friday ill hopfully have close to the 290bhp figure and a car that sounds the sex :)

What are peoples experiences with H+S exhausts?

Milkybadger 30 May 2012 06:35 PM

Dropped the car off and it looks like hes got me a full Milltek instead of H+S .... Nice

I have a full H&S turbo back system and love it. Used Miltek at a place I used to work and I prefer the finish of the H&S but not a lot in it. Not heard one on a Subaru though, only ever on Focus ST and RS.

On a side note, Ive just got a job at JLR so might see you around.

Milkybadger 31 May 2012 12:05 AM

Are you one of the new Apprentices for September? or ..

DT-SPD 31 May 2012 10:20 AM

no I'm a Calibration Engineer, hoping to start some time in June.

Milkybadger 31 May 2012 11:40 AM

Sweet, which site?

Bristol98 31 May 2012 12:18 PM

Milky, I have a full H+S on a classic and wouldn't go for anything else, quite quiet at idle, but open her up and :D:D:D:D:D

DT-SPD 31 May 2012 08:42 PM

Ok. Good to hear there is a fellow Subaru fan on site :)

toneh 31 May 2012 09:29 PM

Please guys , I posted again correcting what I should have said
I reiterate
I should have said mapping and dyno time
That said other than a power run or two
Please tell me what £90 will get at your local tuner
My local is scooby clinic by the way
So your welcome to tell them they work slow if you wish but I've got no complaints

DonNedly 31 May 2012 10:21 PM

All i know is £90 at powerstation buys me enough dyno time for Dynamix to do his tweaking on mine.
